The current President has made it clear that he is the leader of the American regime, period.
His actions today show he is not interested in defending freedom in the world. In fact, he wants to restrict freedom. He also wants to discriminate based on religion.
If Americans want that, that is their business. But he has no claim to lead other free nations.
Hear, hear. Good call. I thought the phrase should have been retired at the end of the Cold War, when what was meant by the “Unfree World” became murkier, and also the arc of US hegemony was starting to peak.
I agree. We should refrain from using any and all of those honorary titles. I can’t even make myself refer to him as President. I’m going to keep calling him The Donald.

I am seriously wondering if do not know that no spaces go between the end of a sentence and it’s ending punctuation. Doing it now and then could be explained away as typos/oversights. But literally everything you post is this way. Why ?
It had an opportunity to pull up its socks with Obama, but chose not to by electing whom it did to Congress.
It had a further opportunity to improve its situation in the last election, but chose not to change Congress and knowingly chose to put a fascist in the presidency with a fanatic from the religious right as his backup.
Many states are off the rails with GLBT hatred, misogyny, racism, religious fanaticism, and a celebration of ignorance that is so severe that guns and god trumps universal healthcare.
The United States does not lead the free world, and in fact has become a hazard to the free world. It cannot even lead itself out of the cellar it has dug for itself. It is only a flawed democracy charging about like a deranged bull in a china shop, too blind in its mindless fury to recognize what it is and what it is not – and what it is not is a leader, let alone the leader of the free world.
And, to be fair, even though Obama was on board with many pro-democracy positions such as supporting workers’ rights, fighting racist policies in law enforcement, etc., his administration’s policies in other respects were appalling: indefinite detentions, drone assassinations, invasive and non-transparent surveillance policies, and so on.
And that was reflected in our marginal Democracy Index scores even before 2017. We will need to do a lot more than just clean up after Trump in order to get our Full Democracy status back.
