I recently returned from seeing my family on Christmas vacation. They live in rural Eastern Washington, and one thing that greatly surprised me is that both grocery stores in their town (one a Safeway, another locally owned) were open for about 8 hours on Christmas Day itself. This was not the case last year. Are more stores open on Christmas Day now than in the past, and if so how far do you think it will go?
around here a lot of are grocery opened on that day for the “just in case” people who need to buy or replace something in their cooking from like 8-3 some drug stores that sell things for last minutes x-mas presents
one local hardware store was known for this they had "the dad forgot its Xmas corner " at 10 pm the line was out the door …
Working in a store owned by Orthodox Jews means working on Christmas, and hearing such gems as “I have to get the kid a present before he wakes up” (What? You just found out it’s December 25th) and "You shouldn’t have to work Christmas Day (If you didn’t come in here on Christmas Day, I wouldn’t have to work). OTOH, it means double pay and two tips.
I noticed the opposite. Last year, I didn’t have a roasting pan for the bird. Smith’s and Dollar General were both closed.
This year, it was plainly announced that Smith’s would be close all day.
The big grocery stores around here are open until 4 PM on Thanksgiving but mostly because they sell lots of premade turkey dinner setups. However they were all closed for Christmas, and didn’t advertise any dinner packages. I found that strange.
I think all stores here in Montreal were closed on Christmas day and will be closed tomorrow too. Otherwise they are generally open on holidays. What a difference from when I moved here around 50 years ago. Store hours were strictly limited. Everything closed by 6 except on Friday (and Thursday?) till 9. Saturdays they had to close at 5 and Sunday was forbidden. I think they could not open till 9.
The only thing I saw open on Christmas day were the Chinese food places and I think possibly a Dunkin Donuts.
Walgreen’s and 7/11 are open in Christmas in my neighborhood, as is a local grocery store.
Every Christmas morning, for the past 30 years, we’ve made the drive from Chicago to Green Bay, to celebrate Christmas with my family.
When we first started doing this, the only stores along the way that were open on Christmas morning were a few convenience stores. Now, while most stores are still closed, we see a fair number of gas stations open, and a handful of other places (like Walgreens, and a few fast-food restaurants).
