What those posters attempting to engage debate with those racist jackasses fail to realize is that, while the Straight Dope’s stated mission to eradicate ignorance is wonderful, those racist jackasses are not simply ignorant. They are willingly and determinedly stupid. There is no debate with such.
As is often mentioned when these things crop up, we continue these debates in the face of persistant ignorance because:
- these arguments shouldn’t remain uncountered;
- it’s good practice for when you encounter them elsewhere, particularly if the next perpetrator is better at arguing his case;
- it informs lurkers who would otherwise only see one side of the story; and
- this.
I still think banishment to a parallel universe makes sense.

Apparently, there was a meeting a few years ago where it was decided that then-current methods were not winning any converts and a few were instructed with new debate philosophies before being tossed, much like young Mormon boys into a gentile neighborhood, into the message board frays around the inter webs.
I keep running across the same format from them: coyly dancing around the real credo, refusing to lose their tempers, pounding and pounding at one little point which, if they can just win, will cause all the rest of us to fall into place. I wonder if they came up with the tactic themselves or hired an outside consultant?

Oh I lurk their site from time to time, even registered and introduced myself as a Filipino. A lot of it is redneck griping and false science. But the purely observational issues make some sense.
