Straight Dope Bourbon Society

Just had to check in and say, this thread inspired me to run out and grab a bottle of Maker’s Mark. My well-used Finlandia vodka thanks you all for the night off.

One notch up. A free bottle in front of me, vs. a prefrontal lobotomy.

Try their Birthday bourbon. It’s a whole different creature entirely! 3+ times the price, but you can taste every dollar.

I just got back from a bourbon run, where I secured a backup bottle of Old Grand-Dad and brought Knob Creek back into rotation.

Afficionados: Is is heretical to have your Maker’s Mark on the rocks with a squeeze of lemon?

Mmmm.

You actually made me say “ho”. Get thee to a Cosmo, pal.

Hey man, what’s a “bourbon run”? (Note: If it involves an RV, a smelly dog and a pilgrimage back to Kentucky, I don’t want to know.)

“Don’t want to know”, or “want to come along?”

Actually, it was a short jaunt to the local BevMo for the express intention of procuring more corny comestibles. I almost added a bottle of Russell’s Reserve, but the wallet wouldn’t take the hit.

For rye, I like Old Overholt. It is not expensive, but it is very nice.

Exactly.

That’s it. Old Overholt goes on the shopping list. Too many people are saying the same things about it: cheap and good.

I have a bottle of Knob Creek open now – pretty much the only bourbon I drink (I am generally a single malt scotch guy).

And here’s another vote for Old Overholt. It’s rare that I’m in the mood for a good rye on the rocks, but when I am, OO answers the mail nicely.

See my cranberry recipe in the thanksgiving thread for what is good to do with bourbon.

One shot old Overholt, one half-shot sweet vermouth, and two drops of bitters. It’s good for you.

I have heard great things about the birthday bourbon, but have yet to try it. I will put it at the top of my list of bottles to track down. Thanks.

mmm, I may need to do a bourbon run myself.

The only problem with the Birthday bourbon is the bottle. It’s a nice design and all, but it takes up twice the cabinet space of a regular bottle. Oh, well. The taste is worth it.

It really is nice. It’s a good thing that it’s so unfashionable otherwise it would cost twice as much or more.

There’s always a bottle of Old Overcoat in my desk at work.

I’ll also stray across the Tennessee line and enjoy Gentleman Jack in the same fashion.

Wow you guys are way too sophisticated for me.

Huh? Not to be confrontational (enjoy your bourbon any way you like,) but does this really make sense? Doesn’t bourbon have quite a lot of water in it anyway? Wouldn’t those compounds already be dissolved in it, and therefore already be part of the flavor profile? Why would a couple drops of water make any difference at all? I’m pretty leery of the chemistry here, but by all means, eradicate my ignorance.
