Straight Dope Favicon

I’m using Safari on a Macbook and there I’m not seeing a favicon, anyone have one? I just checked it in my Firefox and there wasn’t one either.

Oh, that’s what that is called! No, the SDMB doesn’t have one, as far I know. I am using Firefox on Mac.

It would have the default VBulletin one if the board had been installed at the document root rather than Straight Dope Message Board - Your direct line to thousands of the smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks. you can find the VB favicon at http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/favicon.ico.

There ain’t one. You can add your own in Firefox, but it doesn’t work on subdirectories. Here’s mine. It’s supposed to be a “slow moving vehicle” sign. I assume you understand what the meaning is.

Just a little background - the favicon mechanism is usually very simple. When your browser loads a page on a new site, it makes a request for {domain}/favicon.ico. If there is such a thing, that icon is cached and used for all pages under that domain. All the site has to do is place the desired favicon.ico directly under the doc root. There is also a link tag that can be placed in the page to specify a different graphic on a page-by-page basis, or from some other location, but it doesn’t seem to be used much.

IMO, it’s a convenient thing for labeling bookmarks, but flawed in its execution, if user control of the feature doesn’t exist in the browser.

I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.16 Anyone know how I can change the favicon? Many of mine are wrong. The SDMB has the Yahoo! Y! next to it. How do I fix that?

Thanks.
