Straight Dope.. Thank you

OK, so I’m getting ready for work this morning and I stop the program I’ve recorded on my DVR and the tuner goes to the informercial running on the channel I’d been watching earlier. It’s a pitch for some Miracle Foam mattress, and the last thing I hear before switching it off is a claim to the effect that the Wall Street Journal had reported that over 10 years a mattress would double its weight by the leavings of dust mites.

Now I thought that was a crazy claim and was certain that it wasn’t true. But, I was curious as to what the Wall Street Journal may have actually written that would have led these mattress merchants to make such a claim. So, I made plans to post to the SDMB and ask when I got into work.

However, knowing that Google is my friend and not willing to risk the wrath of my fellow Dopers, I searched “dust mites” and “Wall Street Journal” before I created my post. Imagine my delight when the first search result was this .

So now I just want to say…Thank you Straight Dope. You have increased my knowledge in countless ways. It’s good to know that no matter what bizarre question my fevered mind conjures, there’s a solid resource I can turn to for the answer.

On behalf of everyone involved, excluding Cecil Adams, Ed Zotti, the entire staff of the Chicago Reader, all paying members, guests and moderators of the SDMB, as well as residents of Chicago, you’re welcome!

I think what’s crazy is that they continue to make the same claim- talk about BS!

My GF was told that by her grand employers when she was selling furniture. It’s a “factoid” that the mattress manufacturers and, as the above linked column points out, companies selling allergy snake-oil like to keep shoving in the public’s faces.

Sheesh. Every knows that it doubles it’s weight due to urea and dead skin.

And cat hair.

And cracker crumbs.

And wet spots.

I want to party with you guys!

And dead hookers.

What?

I learned recently that dust mites can’t even live in Calgary - we’re too dry here. No hookers, either. They like it nice and moist.

I have a temper pedic type matress. I dont care about mites .I just like the support. Never thought about the mites til I read about them not living in the foam . just a bonus.
