I notice there’s a facebook group called “Straight Dopers.” It has the Straight Dope logo at the top, and its “about” text starts with
However, the group only has one admin. Is it still active? It’s a closed group so I can’t see any posts.

It is still active, but not very. There were a couple of recent posts about a board outage.
I think it was started by several banned members who had lost posting privileges here, so they could comment on the most active threads that were going on here and still feel part of the group. But they all got sick of each other’s blatantly breaking the posting rules, so it kind of died out.
People don’t really post on the group page; it’s just good to find “friends” on FB. Then we post on each others’ walls instead.
That’s sort of sad.
Really? Why?
It has a list of usernames and RL names, so SMDB folks can check in. It’s a way of linking folks off-board. Then you can friend who you want. We post here, we don’t really need to post there, too, I guess.
That might be nice to see. As it’s a private group – meaning you have to join to be able to see anything in it – no outsiders can get that list. I sent out a Join request a few days ago but it hasn’t been responded to. (Having only one admin probably has something to do with that.)
The board does say that people with private profiles need to send a private message to the admin instead, but my Facebook profile is as public as I know how to make it.
You just made all of that up. That is not how the group started, how it is used, or why it is not a very active page now. See the Rushgeekgirl and IvoryTowerDenizen posts for the mundane truth.
If you’d like, I can post to it alerting the admin to look for a request.
Maybe he is thinking of that other board instead?
That crossed my mind. I’m sure there is some shred of factual basis for his post, but it was so off-base applied to the Straight Dopers group that I decided to cut him no slack.
