The reason they were detained was that they were laughing joking and smiling while 3000 people were being murdered. They had no valid visas to be in the US, they could not explain what they were doing , and they had no valid work permits. They refused to answer any questions. Does that answer YOUR question?
No, answering a rhetorical question doesn’t win you any brownie points. The question I asked was if you had any proof that the 5 people were Mossad, or if you only had random speculation. On second thought you did answer the question - clearly you only have random speculation and no proof.

No work permits? At every given moment, thee are probably around 2000 Israelis aged 20-30 working in New York without permits; a good half of them work in the moving business, a lage porion of which is controlled by Israeli companies. It’s quite common - kids get out of the army, work real hard for a year or two, go backpacking in South America and then come home for college. Regrettably, work visas - not to mention Green Cards - are extremely hard to get (although I’m sure the almighty Mossad could get its hands on some if needs be, mmm?).
After 9/11 the FBI went on a sweep for illegal aliens, and locked up - later deported - anyone with vaguely Middle-Eastern origins.
As for the laughter, I can’t really tell you. Maybe they were just assholes.
The laughter seems to be the key point here.
Assuming that they were Mossad (which I don’t) and were laughing (which I don’t), I’d have thought that it was possible that they evaluated the US response to this and reasonably concluded that it should benefit them. Then they laughed at the thought that people who were probably no friend of Israel’s were doing them a favour.
Thsat’s acutally, kinda sorta what I meant, but I didn’t phrase well in my eagerness to diss an obvious conspiracy theory.
I have no problem believing there were (and still are) Mossad agents in New York. I’d be more surprised if there weren’t Mossad agents in NYC, as well as intelligence agents from almost every nation that has a consulate in NYC.
It’s the harebrained conclusion that Israel was somehow involved in the planning and execution of the hijackings that I (and the vast majority of Dopers, I expect) call BULLSHIT on.
