Ack! As I’m writing this everything on my monitor is shifting - kind of squinching up and then returning to normal. A few weeks ago is when I first started noticing problems – the images on the left and right hand side of the monitor were squished together, and no amount of fiddling with the controls could fix it. Alluvasudden now the monitor is resizing itself as I’m typing and when I move the mouse around the screen – if I move it around on the right side of the screen, everything bunches up on that side, etc.
Any idea what this could be and how I could fix it? Am I SOL? New monitor?
The monitor is only two years old, and it’s actually one I gave to my parents when I got a new computer. If I hadn’t already got them their Christmas present I’d go ahead and get a new one, but I’m broke now! Heh.
Strangely enough, after posting my query it seems to have quieted down a bit, but it’s still doing this random ripple effect every now and again.
I’m not sure my parents are extremely discriminating with what they download and what email they open, so I’m curious if this could be some sort of virus.
I guess I’ll just have to give in and get a new monitor soon, though.
Are there any machines near your monitor? More specifically fans or other items with a motor in it? If so get it away from your monitor.
Otherwise it sounds like your monitor is crapping out (although it might also be your video card).
Monitors are too cheap these days to be worth repairing most of the time. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR YOUR MONITOR YOURSELF!!! Monitors are very dangerous with their covers off if you don’t know what you’re doing so stay away.
You can get a new 17" CRT monitor for around $150-200 these days and they’re pretty decent.
I’m afraid the other folks who’ve responded are probably right, and you (or your parents) are facing a purchase. But, there are two things that are worth checking, before making that decision.
First, some monitors have a button or internal setup menu option that lets you degauss the monitor. If yours has this option, give it a shot; it might help. Second, the effects you’re describing can be caused by strong active magnetic fields in the immediate vicinity of the monitor. Unshielded speakers are the usual culprits.
Both of these are long shots, but they don’t cost anything to check out.
Also check the refresh settings on the display settings.
Right click on the empty desktop and select properties. Under display settings, there should be an option for advanced or settings. Try to locate refresh settings for display adapters.
Most likely this is not the issue because the weird stuff is only occuring randomly.
I never thought about it, but like the above posts, check for any interference near the computer.
You can say that again. About a month ago I picked up five 17" HP monitors from the trash. One was bad and 4 were perfect, like new. You can’t beat that price.
Alot of monitor posts, but the answer is the same. Look at the back of the monitor find the date & manf, what are they?
Usually just lightly bang the side of the monitor, does the picture restore itself? if so re connect it in the back & see if that does it, if not a cold solder joing. But always give the make, manf & date of manf if you can, this makes it a whole lot easier to answer.
Did you buy the monitor new? A few brands have three year warranties. We had a two year old monitor in my office go bad last year, and the manufacturer replaced it (with a reconditioned one, but still) at no charge.
Who knows, for the cost of shipping it back to the manufacturer, you might get a replacement. It’s worth checking out.
