Strange Media Player 11 problem

I’m pretty PC tech savvy, but I haven’t had much luck googling this problem.

When I try and play any mpg file with MP 11 the file loads, plays a couple of frames, and then immediately slows to a halt. No error message, it just chokes on the file. When I ctrl-alt-del it shows wmplayer.exe running at 99% (PC is noticeably bogged down). And it doesn’t say that its not responding when I end task.

It will play avi’s and wmv’s fine. If I rollback 11 to Media Player 9 it still does it. But Media Player Classic (i.e. MP 6) will play the mpg’s just fine.

Its not a codec problem. It could be a video driver problem, but I have the latest driver and haven’t had any other problems.

For anything that boggles WMP I’d use VLC Media Player. It will play damn near anything.

Yeah, I have that too, though VLC can be a little buggy as well.

I can live without MP 11. In fact, if it weren’t for Napster needing the DRM, I would prefer to live without MP 11, bloated annoying made-for-idiots program that it is.

Just bugs me to not know what’s causing 11 to choke on those files like that. I’ve never seen it do that.
