Strange Mod Note re: Following posters around and harassment

No doubt. And…?

And some people don’t want that.

And I consider them a little on the paranoid side. I thought I made that clear.

Your opinions don’t really matter. It’s been a problem for some people, and they’d prefer not to have repeats.

You’re either lying or you’re not.

If a poster feels that consistent low-stakes low-grade lying is the only way for them to interact with the boards, fine. It’s not the end of the world, but getting called out and losing credibility one day is a totally predictable outcome.

Losing credibility with who? The five or six or eight people who care that you said you were 52 in one post and 57 in a post a month later?

I think more than 5 or 6 might care if it’s being pointed out that your biographical details are not honest.

Now, there’s caring, and there’s caring. Some people will care only to the extent that they know to dismiss any details you choose to give about your life, because they realize you’re full of it. But they just choose to ignore it. Others may want to pillory you over it in the Pit. I think there will be many more of the former than the latter.

But no, if you choose to volunteer personal details and those are shown to be inconsistent and probably false, I think quite a few people will care to some degree.

The bigger problem is the environment in which playing the game of hunting around forums for decade long discrepancies is actually rewarded.

Do you mean because MH got banned for lying about his background and using his made-up background to try and win arguments? That seems different than obfuscating your personal situation in order to remain anonymous. But go ahead and defend an admitted troll.

Admitted? Where?

He admitted to trolling on Giraffe Boards after he got banned, if you’re talking about Martin Hyde. He gloried in trolling this board for years. That’s not really the kind of guy I would want to white knight, but you do you.

A bit reductive, but sure.

Otherwise, what @Atamasama said.

Yeah, someone pointed me to this. A poster claimed to have been Martin Hyde here, and claimed it had all been a troll job from the start. And gloated about it.

I obviously have no proof that an anonymous poster one message board actually is the same person as the anonymous poster he claimed to be on another board. But if it was a fake, it was a good one, and it was the same “voice” and that poster was clearly in top of a lot of details.

And you believe this person, the biggest troll and liar ever according to his pit thread? You take his word? Or is he just spoon feeding more troll bites to the long neckers?

Well, that’s sort of a Catch-22. If a person confesses to a crime, then you can always ask if you are going to believe the word of a criminal.

How highly do you rate confessions to an anonymous message board?

As high as anything on an anonymous message board, I guess. But again, we’re only talking about things in the context of an anonymous message board, so the stakes are extremely low here.

Stakes are low until someone gets dragged through a pit thread pile-on then banned for hyperbole and accusations of trolling.

Which of course hasn’t happened.

What do you mean? No pit thread no pile on no accusations no banning? That’s the usual progression as I see it.
