Strange people (on other message boards) re: celebrity worship

I forgot, I also go to the DOORS bbs although I don’t contribute much there(like I do here, wink wink). Some are rabid worshipers and others seem quite sane.

But maybe He has written other less perfect column in the past.

The “Michael Crawford for the Phantom Movie” site and campaign got totally out of hand. It’s a freaking MOVIE, for Chrissake’s. And Crawford would have been good 20 years ago.

If you are referring to Barry Manilow, you’d better not have anything negative to say about him on that board. I hear his fans are really fanatical.

Aha! So you’re one of the TF.Netters, the ones that the fanboys over on SD.net are constantly bitching about! Yeah, there ain’t no fandom more frightening than that of popular sci-fi or fantasy series.

X-Files fan here. Heaven forbid I post at a shipper site that I enjoyed an episode with Doggett in it! You’d think I’d admitted to spitting on an effigy of Duchovny or worshiping Baphomet or something…

For the truly strange TV obsessions, nothing beats the boards on the IMDb. There’s actually people chatting about The Greatest American Hero. ::shudder::

 No, it’s not Barry Manilow. I am aware, however, of Barry’s cadre of zealots; I have a friend who has followed him on tour, like a Deadhead. I find it baffling, personally.

SD.net? What’s that?

Yep, I’m a Jedi Council member, as well as an Icon Artist for the boards, and a member of many different groups there.

Manilow Heads?

Oh my gosh! These people are everywheerrrrre! Scary!

Jean Grey, I don’t want to say which Stargate board it is. You can email me if you really want to know!

many of the people there do seem sweet and not terribly scary, but they know far, far, far more about Stargate SG-1 than I can comprehend.

I do think that there is some excessive worship of Richard Dean Anderson going with some of them too. But, oh well, as long as they don’t have an altar to the guy in their bedroom…

Yeesh.

Y’all might be comforted to know that, while adults can often act like teenagers on a fan site, teenagers can sometimes act like adults on a fan site.

At the Haley Joel Osment fan board I frequent, (yes, I saw Secondhand Lions this afternoon) when someone posts something hyperbolic, like “OMIGOD I love Haley so much, he is the g reatest thing to eva grace this earth blah blah blah…” someone always posts back to say, “Get a grip, please! He’s a terrific actor, and yeah, he’s hot, but he’s a kid like us! Don’t you think he’d be embarrassed if he knew people were saying stuff like that about him?” Then someone else will jump in to say, “Yeah, and you don’t even know him, so how can you say you’re in love with him?”

And none of those “someones” are me. I’m sort of the mother hen around there, but these kids don’t need too much guidance to keep from becoming fangeeks. And in case you’re wondering, they seem to be fairly intelligent to begin with. No |33+, not too many !!!s, and they take their schoolwork pretty seriously, because they’re often posting about it. (I have given them advice a time or three on that front.)

Incidentally, there was this one time that a rumor was going around that Haley had flipped someone off after an interview. It was a complete and total troll who posted it, claiming that they’d read about it in a gossip column that turned out not to exist, so please don’t go reporting it as fact! But my take on it was that I didn’t think it happened, because "Besides the fact that we all think he wouldn’t do that, and that his dad would flay him alive if he did, I would have heard about it from another source. Because on this other board I go to, people are always up on the very latest news and gossip, and a lot of them know I like Haley, so one of them would have linked to it by now, even if just to say, “‘Huh huh, Rilch, whaddaya think of your golden boy now?’”

You could say the reverse is true too. Some people so hate an actor/ress, they will diss a good movie, just because said actor is in it. Any movie with Leo di Caprio or Nicole Kidman will get this.

Boy am I glad I keep my idol/hero worship to cartoon characters. Although I steer away from fansite discussions of said, I spend too much time with SDMB and Neopets boards. Plus I can’t bear to fully comprehend I am not the only one highly enjoying the cartoon character.

On cartoons though, oh cod, don’t get my started on the…you know…the fanfictioners, or the ‘artists,’ who draw those things…oh my. If I recollect an old cartoon from my heyday, and I google it, I honestly don’t want to see Rude Dog having an orgy, or Unico goring the West? Wind, or anything like that! Oh, my poor childhood memories ransacked by the adult fans. Well, I suppose folk do that too with real-life actors and all too. How awful it would be to realize people are writing dozens of slash fictions starring you and the author.

Believe it or not…

Hey, remember that link I found for Who’s the Boss Fan Fiction?

shudder

This reminds me, Juniper200 recently found a truly horrifying thing that she shared in her journal. I did not click on it, because I am not insane.

Ent/elf slash.

Gah! Even without having actually read it, I want to scrub my brain with bleach!

Oh, don’t even get me started on the fan fiction.

Some of it is fun. Hell, some of my friends write fan fic. Some respected and published authors have done fan fic. But some of that stuff is SO SCARY.

(I don’t know what ent/elf slash is. Please don’t tell me.)

I find that with most of my friends… if they hate an actor with a passion but will rave about a movie despite them being in it. I’d better get my butt out to see it cuz it’s gotta be good!

Example: My roomie really really hates DiCaprio but he went to see Catch Me If You Can and came home raving about how good a movie it was.

I can never quite get all the people who go nuts over their favourite movie star or music star, but in some ways I can see how it works. I’ve never been able to get into actors/singers like others do but I’ll admit to being a book nut. Okay I’m a Pern nut. I’ve read everything I could get my hands on and hold my own decently in a conversation about it but even then I’m not as much a ‘fan’ as some people online! So despite my obsession I can rest in the knowledge that somewhere out there someone knows even more than I do about it. Which means I haven’t hit full geekdom yet.

I think I know which Stargate boards are being talked about. I’m a recovering addict. Of course, like most addicts, I have simply traded one addiction for another, and am now spending too much time at Fiction Alley. Thankfully they’re not too weird over there, but believe it or not, the SDMB is my sane-people message board. This is where I come when I realise I am a hopeless fangirl and need to spend time with people who are normal.

yosemitebabe, I presume Ent/elf slash is fic featuring a homosexual relationship between a pointy-eared being and a walking tree.

Loneraven I think what was meant was… we don’t want to know what it’s about… Elf/Ent slash? I agree with scrubbing the brain… but then again I used to hang with a group in chat who had this whole weird thing for ARTOD™ and Sheepo…

[sub]ARTOD™ being checks that this is the pit Ass Raping Tree Of Doom and Sheepo being… well a sheep… that ARTOD™ had a strange fascination for… of course no one ever explicitly said what ARTOD did to Sheepo we all knew… we all knew…[/sub]
