Each time I go to drop a letter in the public postal boxes, I always feel like I will accidently drop my keys or some other possesion of importance into the box.
Mr. Postman, my question for you is- what are some of the strange things people have left for you in the public mailboxes? Keys? Wallets? Naked Photos?
To the other 98% here, who probably are not postman- Have you ever accidently dropped something into a mailbox, newspaper bin, or other public death trap bin? What was it that you lost?
My husband is a letter carrier for the USPS. He doesn’t do collections that often, but one of the few times that he did, he found some checks in there. He delivered them to the person who’d dropped them in by accident, and she ended up writing a letter complimenting him to his postmaster, which got put in his personnel file.
When my brother and I were three and two years old, my brother decided we should mail our clothes to some far-off destination.
We took off everything we were wearing, and ‘mailed’ them in the mail box at the intersection of Nebraska Avenue and Albemarle Street in Washington, DC.
I vaguely recall a nice policeman escorting us little naked hellions back to our house, knocking on the door, and saying to my other, much older brother 'Are these yours?'
Back in the 80’s, my parents were preparing for an overseas trip. They had written checks to pay a bunch of bills, and stopped at a mailbox to post them, the day of the trip. Along with the envelops, into the mailbox went their paper tickets for the plane ride. This was pre-etickets. You HAD to have your paper ticket.
Thankfully, Dad was able to find the postmistress, who was staying late at the postoffice, and she was willing to come out and open the box and retrieve the tickets for them.
