Stranger Things - Final Season

Netflix has just released the first teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 5: https://youtu.be/iKZyYdwS3Wg

It seems they are going for a “holiday weekend” release schedule:

  • Vol 1 on November 26
  • Vol 2 on Christmas
  • Finale on New Year’s Eve

I’m all in - can’t wait to see how they close it out! Fingers crossed they don’t screw it up

My wife has just informed me that we are going to watch this last season (we watched all the others but were in doubt about this one, the quality is diminishing with each season and the “kids” are now starting to receive letters from the AARP), but she says that since Linda Hamilton is in this we have to see it.

I dunno. I feel like the novelty wore off a few years ago. Not super excited but I’ll watch just as I watched season 2 of The Last of Us.

The last season I really enjoyed was season 2. Season 4 seemed to take a more deliberate turn toward the gruesome horror genre, which I am not a fan of.

Interesting - that’s actually my least favorite season. I think Season 3 is probably my favorite.

Against my better judgement, I’m looking forward to watching the final season. I’m a sucker for conclusions, even several years late.

I wonder, since several IRL years have gone by since S.4, and the characters were already showing their ages in S.4, are they still supposed to be early high school age, or are they doing an ‘IT’ thing where the characters regroup several years later when the Big Evil re-emerges? That could work-- instead of 80s nostalgia, we got early 90s nostalgia!

It’s not clear from the trailer when S.5 is supposed to take place, except that the Sadie Sink character is still in the hospital, and I doubt they’re doing a plotline where she’s been in a coma for years or something. Oh well, if the S.5 plotline is that they are just starting their Sophomore year, I’ll roll with it-- my willing suspension of disbelief is strong.

Yeah, it’s ridiculous - they all look 30 now , but I just don’t care. Children grow up, actors too, and it’s just not important to me that I’m going to allow it to ruin the series for me. Maybe exposure to the Upside Down has aged them all faster than normal?

Just out of curiousity, I looked up their actual ages and found this info:

The kids were finishing 9th grade in season 4- - so they should be around 15.

In actuality, when they filmed season 4, the kids were the following ages

Finn Wolfhard 18

Millie Bobby Brown 16, turning 17 during filiming

Noah Schnapp 16

Caleb McLaughlin 19

Sadie Sink 17, turning 18 during filming

Season 5 filming is beginning almost exactly 4 years after season 4 filming began. We don’t know for sure how much time will have passed between the events of season 4 (set in the spring of 1986) and the events of season 5 - A time jump of several years might let the kids “catch up” with their real ages a bit.

So Caleb McLaughlin, the oldest actor, is now 23. That’s not that bad. If I recall correctly, some of the 90210 kids were actually into their 30s while they were still supposed to be in high school.

Since I haven’t had Netflix for years… I had kind of assumed S.5 had come out and just didnt make much of a cultural impact… I thought S.4 ended on not a cliffhanger but with a clear idea that we’re rolling right into season 5 in terms of story urgency?
This is too comically long of a time inbetween…But… that trailer has me intrigued.

And don’t forget the “kids,” like Stockard Channing, who were in their 30s when the filmed Grease.

As they progress through the 80s, so do they progress through the genres and references. Season 4 had evolved into a Freddy Krueger / Hellraiser kind of vibe.

About 40 episodes in 9 years.

Insane. Love the show, but I’d like to see this trend go away. I’m aware part of this year’s delay was the strike, but that is only this one season.

I will watch this just to get a definite conclusion. I liked the first and second seasons, but the third season Russian base underneath Hawkins was just goofy. I liked the return to grim darkness in season 4.
