Stray? Cat

Hi dopers!

::waives furiously::

I’ve come out of lurk mode because I need your help. I live in the Dallas area and it’s done nothing but pour icy cold rain here for the past 3 days, plus it’s just been cold (for here at least).

I have been home since the middle of last week recovering from shoulder surgery. Yes, Percoset is my friend :).

Yesterday afternoon, my dog, Kitty started freaking out at the back patio acting like he’s not really a prissy little thing and that he WANTS to go outside into the misery. I figured he just wanted to go pester some squirrels, he’s a Westie, it’s what he does best. Just to make sure though I put my glasses on as I was enjoying the painkiller haze and hadn’t even bothered to put in my contacts.

Rather than a squirrel, I see a cat. No, it wasn’t a cute kitten to squee over. Instead it was a giant, orange meatball of a cat who looked distinctly malevolent. And wet. And cold.

I love cats, even giant orange digruntled ones, but I can’t have them because I am allergic to them. But, I felt bad for this guy as he clearly needed my assistance. I opened my garage about 10 inches so he can come and go. I took a large cardboard box and stuffed it with towels. I called him into the garage. No reaction other than I think he rolled his eyes at me. Kitty, my dog, was freaking out inside thinking I am calling him.

I finally figured out that a can of tuna would do what all the talk in the world wouldn’t. The smell lured him into the garage. I also gave him a bowl of fresh water.

He doesn’t appear sick, and he doesn’t appear to be a hungry stray. He’s got to be about 20 pounds even minus the semi-long orange tabby fur. He doesn’t seem to want to be touched, but I think he’s a tom. I’m fairly sure those are fuzzy orange nuts back there rather than fuzzy orange butt cheeks, but he does not seem inclined to let me check yet.

He slept in the box last night. If he doesn’t go back home in a couple of days I will put some signs up and maybe an ad in the paper. I’m really not supposed to even do much other than sleep, pee and eat yet, but I’ll get him home assuming he has one.

Dopers, am I forgetting anything this kitty needs and that I can get my friend who is taking care of me to buy? Do you have any suggestions regarding finding his owners? Making him like me a touch more?

Thanks,

Heidi

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things just making sure he can get out of the rain and has somewhere to sleep, and some food. Is there a vet near you where someone might have reported him missing? You could try phoning them to see if they can suggest other places where his owners might have reported him gone.

Other than that, ads in the paper and posters around your area are the best way to see if he has an owner.

Also, if the cat’s not wearing an ID collar with a contact number on it, the vet should be able to scan for a microchip which might identify his owner.

Bless you for feeding him!

umm…pics!!! I wanna see your dog “Kitty”! I know your doped up and all but sometime will you post a pic?? My M&D have a Westie named “Abbey” short for Aberdeen, Scottland. Your doing what you can for the orange monster…call a vet and have a friend take the cat if possible. You need to rest like the Doc. says to. Bless you too for taking him in! :smiley:
