North-south streets–street; east-west–avenue (take that, Manhattan)
Diagonal–road
Dead-end streets–terrace, point, cove, dale, way
Cul-de-sacs–court
Short curved roads with ingress and egress from the same thoroughfare–circle."
Whatever Guilford County city planners may say, the county government complex itself is on Washington STREET, which runs EAST-WEST.
i nominate atlanta, ga for the most egregious avoidance of sense when choosing names. i can think of at least 8 roads (including three major ones) named “peachtree” something. this is not counting old peachtree-something, or any of the many other weirdnesses. the directions “take peachtree for a mile, then left on peachtree, and peachtree’s off to the right” actually make sense by the mall.

emoryj, I agree completely, having lived there myself for a few years.
I seem to recall reading someplace that there are at least 42 (!) streets, roads, etc., in and around Atlanta with “Peachtree” in their names. (It was very annoying to be driving on Peachtree Dunwoody Road, only to remember that I was supposed to be on Peachtree Industrial Road, in a different direction.)
And it’s not just Peachtree, either. I lived near Briarcliff Road, which is crossed by (among others) Briarcliff Terrace, Briarcliff Place, Old Briarcliff Rd., etc., etc., not to mention a gaggle of side streets whose names either begin with “Briar” or end with “cliff.”
This, of course, is besides the fact that outside of downtown Atlanta, almost no street actually runs in a straight line from point A to point B. Aaargh!

It kills me that the letter was written by someone in my town of Englewood, New Jersey. One of the City’s main streets starts off as Grand AVENUE, then half-way through Englewood, turns into Engle STREET. Teaneck ROAD runs from Ridgefield Park through Bogota and Teaneck, which magically becomes Washington AVENUE in Bergenfield and on through Dumont. That is one long street/avenue.
As for the mailmen - I’m surpsrised they don’t have more trouble getting my mail to me. All within two streets of one another, there is a Thorndale St. North, South and Crescent, and there are repeat addresses on each. Poor mailman.
Try Decatur, Illinois. We have a Main Stree which runs north & south, crossing the Main Street which runs east & west. There is also East North Street, not to be confused with East North Court, which intersects North East Court (obviously, neither is a cul-de-sac or dead end). I live on North Dove Drive which goes from 3400 to almost 3700, crosses North Meadowlark Drive (yeah, the area is known as birdland) and becomes the 3200 block of East Dove Drive.
Oh, and don’t forget King Street, which is not to be confused with Martin Luther King Drive, where the street signs say M.L. King Drive
