Strollers for Older Kids (Somewhat Longish)

A colleague at work is taking her 3rd-grade son to Walt Disney World fall 2009 (he’ll be a fifth-grader then. The kid has pretty severe medical problems, and though he can walk, his mom (my colleague) says that, in hot & humid conditions, he’s winded pretty badly after about a block, and after two blocks he needs a nebulizer treatment. She’s interested in renting a stroller.

WDW strollers are too small for a kid that size, not to mention that a fifth-grader is too old for a stroller anyway. I suggested a wheelchair, but she said that Junior wouldn’t be into it because he doesn’t use a wheelchair in his day-to-day life, AND because it would draw attention to the fact that he has special needs. I said that having a 5th-grader in a stroller would call attention to the fact, you know, he’s a 5th-grader in a stroller. Clearly, we’re at an impasse here.

My question: does anyone know of a company that makes a non-wheelchair-looking, non-stroller-looking walkabout (is that the right word?) for older children? Something that serves the purpose of a stroller and/or a wheelchair, but looks like neither?

When I worked at Six Flags, we rented out motorized scooters. They were so cool that I would often see teenagers renting them so they didn’t have to walk around the big park.

have him rent an electric scooter there. They have them available for older people, and those who cannot walk far. He can drive it about all day, and get the benefit of hopping the queue just like in a wheelchair.
