Hi Guys, I have a complicated situation regarding student loans.
I’m attending graduate school in Denmark, and I’m having trouble finding a job. Unless somebody knows of a way I can get a job (on the internet or whatever in Denmark) I need to get a loan to help with my personal finance. Considering I never had a loan for my BA, I suppose this isn’t so bad. I won’t be very much in debt, so I’m okay with this.
Here’s the rub. In America it would be simple. In Denmark, its simple if you are Danish, you get paid about 450 dollars a month plus another 250 of loans if you choose. But I’m not elegible for this until I work for two years. Simply put, I can’t get money from Denmark. So now I am trying to get money from America.
One main problem is that the loans usually go through a bursar office. But since in Denmark, there is no tuition, there is no bursar, and money to study comes from the government. I was told by my college, that they couldn’t recieve the funds and give them to me.
So basically I suppose I’m looking for some sort of student loan that goes directly to me. I can, however get proof from my university that I’m enrolled.
thanks, no I am a US citizen and I am enrolled in the Uni in Denmark. I am trying to get money from the US to pay for that. I have no university in the US.
For direct admission, your main option is to see if that university or the government can hook you up. You don’t have any claim on an EU member citizenship or residency card do you?
For federal subsidized loans, you are probably out of luck, unless the university has signed a direct loan agreement with Uncle Sam. I know that the American University in Paris makes these funds goes through the program. It is also possible if you enrolled at a school in the US and that university signed a financial aid consortium agreement with your overseas university. I was going to try and do my masters in Budapest back in '95 and got the finger (or the gov’t bureaucrat equivalent).
Outside of the university doing something for you, you can go to a bank and apply for a non-subsidized, non-insured loan. Not sure what kind of terms you can get, but some banks do have something like that available since the government loan limits aren’t enough to cover costs at many schools. I was taking a look at Citibank’s website but their program still requires you to go to school in the US.
Not to point out the obvious, but…have you written or spoken with anyone at the US Department of Education? They are, after all, the same people who run the federal student loan program.
I am confused though (not unusual. When you say the

What do you need/expect from the US Government as far as Student Financial Aid? In theory they could pay Tuition and Room and Board – but is sounds like that is free in Denmark-- are looking for them to a Check directly for an Apartment , utilities and walking around money?
I kind of thought that was what he wants – the U.S. Department of Education to cut a check, for say $20,000, made out to “Merkwurdigliebe” and mailed to him in Denmark - and he will mail the DoED something showing he was registered at a University in Denmark.
If that is indeed what he is asking for – I would be very interested to see if there is any such thing.
Yeah, you guys get the idea. I can’t find any info on the Department of Education website, nor can I really find much info about any email address that I can go to. Maybe its possible to get a loan privately from a bank?
Basically I have no claim for residency for two years. The only stuff in place is for Danish students. They only give money to people who have lived there for 2 years.
