Damn you…damn you all…and yet, thank you all. Because of you people here I have wasted more money on DVD sets than I ever thought I would. I can only read about how great a series is before I have to watch it, and because of you all I have bought/watched the following:
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
I never watched this show when it was on. Thought it was the goofiest concept ever. But after reading thru my 100th BtVS thread, I got season 1 on DVD. I now own all 7.
Angel
Not alot on the boards here about Angel, but since I watched Buffy I had to keep going.
Firefly
I never even heard of this until I got here! Now I own the DVD’s and the movie DVD!!
Babylon 5
I didnt think this was as great as everyone said, but still…I own the DVD’s…and the damn movies.
Smallville
I was never a big fan of Superman. I was a Marvel guy. Now I own 4 seasons on DVD and am watching the 5th as it happens!
24
Never got into this show…until the huge 24 threads for the new season. I watched the first two days, then went and got season 1 on DVD. Damn good show.
And now I keep seeing threads for Veronica Mars! You people are going to drive me to the poor house! Am I the only one this impressionable? Please tell me there are more of you!
I was already a fan, but the CS threads are just as, if not more, entertaining as the show.
Also, I’m Netflixing all the underappreciated shows I always see mentioned alongside Firefly and Arrested Development- I now own Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and Wonderfalls.
Count me in as another one for Firefly. Only problem is, after reading all the threads here, I knew about all the best bits before I even saw it. I’ve introduced at least (counts on fingers…) eight other people to it, and always fantastic to watch the pilot with them and see their reaction to “I am a bad, bad man”.
Lost is another. A friend of mine got me into it first really, but reading the episode-by-episode threads on here just adds a whole other dimension to it.
I’m watching The West Wingagain because of this board.
I should point out that I see it a year or so delayed, because I live in New Zealand. I’d pretty much given up watching after what I was reading in spoilers here (CJ becomes chief of staff? You shittin’ me?!). But I kept on glancing at the WW threads now and then, and …
… Watching again. sigh. It’s not as good as it used to be, of course. But it’s still good.
For me it was Firefly too. I had the TV on and since I had read that Firefly was good, I didn’t turn the TV off after Stargate one night. It was okay, not knowing the characters, the background, then I heard Shepherd Book, give the special place in hell speech and I was hooked.
I’m trying to get CS folks to hook into Hustle on AMC, but I just can’t seem to get anyone’s attention. Oh well, it may yet fail, but not for my lack of trying.
I can’t say any shows I watch are CS related, I’ve got a gaggle of tv friends who hook me into the good stuff before I get it from CS.
Buffy. When I first heard of the show, I thought it was going to be the stupidest thing ever. But after reading about it here, and seeing the episode “Something Blue” at a friend’s house, I decided to give it a shot and now it’s one of my favorite shows ever.
Firefly. After I got hooked on Buffy I heard Whedon was getting involved in some other show. At this point I had seen all the back episodes of Buffy, and was beginning to think that Buffy was suffering because Whedon was streching himself too thin. (Well, I still think that.) I wasn’t inclined to give what’s-it-called-show a fair chance, and mostly forgot about it until the DVDs came out and lots of threads sung its praises. Now I like it even better than Buffy, maybe even better than Star Trek: TNG.
Battlestar Galactica. This time I caught it early, only missing the pilot and a couple early episodes, which I later caught on rerun. It’s certainly one of the best sci-fi shows in the last several years.
Boondocks. That’s some hard-hitting social commentary, and damn funny.
Deadwood is somewhere on the Netflix queue, thanks to the Dope. I might have to bump it up.
You never heard of *renting * from NetFlix?
There aren’t too many shows I became interested in from reading threads -
Firefly, certainly.
Family Guy - I didn’t really like it that much when it was first on years ago. Now it’s one of my faves
That’s really it - I have my VM and my SVU and Monk and Scrubs - I’m happy
Well, there’s the Wheden Triad (Buffy, Angel, Firefly), for which I’m now a huge apologist.
I’m a fan of Deadwood and the Sopranos as a direct result of posts I’ve read in CS.
Oh, and Futurama. Since I’m not a huge fan of the Simpsons, I never would’ve given it a chance if I hadn’t read about it here.
I gave Family Guy a try because of the hype it was generating here, but it just didn’t click for me.
This forum is a useful resource for me, since I tend to avoid television (the commercials drive me nuts). It’s good to find recommendations from other discerning, intelligent people so I can watch the good shows on my DVD player at my leisure.
I agree with this. I trust my abilities to find series and movies on my own and with my friends, but the ones I like are usually in discussion in Cafe society and that really makes me appreciate them on another level.
Hubby and I were watching season 1 of **Scrubs ** just last night - I never would have noticed the show were it not for CS. Now it’s a favorite, especially when I need to put myself in a good mood.
I had seen ads for **Lost ** before it aired, and thought it looked kind of interesting, but then forgot about it until I saw all the threads about it.
And Firefly, natch.
Now that we have TiVo, we hardly ever watch commercials. We also don’t go to the movies much, so we don’t see trailers. So this is my primary source of information on good new shows and movies.
Six Feet Under. I’m watching it fairly slowly, but it’s a great show.
Deadwood I tried, but still haven’t made it all the way through the first episode yet. I’ll keep trying every so often, based only on the ravings of this board.
Smallville. I was under impressed with what I saw of season one but people here kept talking about it so now I’ve watched seasons three & four & am trying to keep up with season five. I started liking it a lot more once I started laughing with the show, instead of sneering at it.
Starved I’d never have even heard about w/out this place and I loved it, despite it’s way too short run.
My name is Earl. Didn’t have much interest but the threads keep popping up each week. Fun show.
