One exception is when one character is trying to tell another character something embarassing:
Man: I mumble mumble mumble…
Woman: What?
Man: I said, mumble mumble mumble…
Woman: I CAN’T HEAR YOU!
(suddenly the room is quiet)
Man: I SAID, I HAVE A GIANT SORE ON MY BALLS!!!
Well, i realize that i’m probably among a dwindling minority nowdays, but NYPD Blue is still one of my favorite shows.
That said, i was really annoyed when Andy Sipowicz (played by Dennis Franz) started having a romantic relationship with Connie McDowell (Charlotte Ross).
I mean, Sipowicz’s last wife, ADA Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence) was a pretty gorgeous woman, but at least she was somewhere close to his age. McDowell’s character is about 30 (if that), and we’re expected to believe that she is all ga-ga over the fat, balding, unrefined Sipowicz.
Don’t get me wrong, i love Sipowicz. I actually think he’s one of the best characters on TV over the last decade; well-written and multi-dimensional. But the whole media thing of constantly putting unattractive old men with beautiful young women gets a bit old after a while. God forbid they actually reverse the situation once in a while.
