My good friend of 20 years is coming to visit. She arrives tomorrow and will be here for two weeks. She’s never been here, and I don’t know the area all that well. I would like to find some good things to occupy us while she’s here.
So far:
[ul]
[li]at least one day trip to NYC[/li][li]a trip to the Baltimore Zoo[/li][li]the National Aquarium in Baltimore[/li][li]various museums in Washington DC[/li][li]day trip to Richmond, VA[/li][li]Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell[/li][/ul]
She also would like to go to Red Bank, NJ, to hit the Kevin Smith store.
Does anyone else have any suggestions? We live in Dundalk, MD - a suburb of Baltimore. We’ll drive a bit to get places. Help me out, guys.
You forgot Annapolis. C’mon, that town rocks. If you dress warm you can take a cruise down the Chesapeake from there. Can’t get much more Marylandy than that. And as long as you’re in Annapolis you could hop across the Bay Bridge and hit the outlet stores.
Depending on how much you dig museums and DC in general you could spend several days there alone. Check out the events that the Smithsonian is having, might be something interesting there that you could kill a day or evening with. Don’t forget that most of the federal agencies in DC give tours, and from talking to people who’ve taken them that’s not as dull as it might sound.
If you guys decide to take in a movie you can do it with a Baltimore flair by taking her to the Charles Theatre or the Senator, both having long histories in Baltimore and at least the Senator being an historic landmark.
Another possibility, depending on you and your friend’s interests, is to check out the battlesites that abound around here. I know that Antietam has a tour you can take in your car, good if the weather gets a little nasty. Fort McHenry is pretty close to you as well.
That’s just off the top of my head. If I think of anything else I’ll come back.
If you are in DC
the Air and Space museum is great fun.
The Folger library is cool if you are inclined to things Shakespearian
The First Ladies exibit at the smithsonian is something almost everyone does and well worth it
If it was me going back there, i would probably get one of my old proffessors to write me a letter of introduction to the maps department at the Library of congress, and no one would see me for the two weeks
Oh cool! My Canadian’s going to be arriving (in Baltimore) on Wednesday. Since I’m chronically short on money and lacking in transportation, we won’t be doing too many exciting things, but we’re going to try to get down to DC on a Friday, since the trains are running then, and maybe go to the aquarium on a Friday night, since it’s only $5 then.

If you like Wyeth art, you will go berzerk here with work by three generations of them. It might be too late for your Canadian friend’s visit, Ginger, but next time perhaps?
The museum and town have a soothing aura, and we relished every minute we spent there. My wife drags me off to art museums, and I have to admit I usually enjoy them almost as much as she does. But this place was very special.
My Canadian is from Edmonton, Alberta. And she’s HERE! Yay!
Also: The FIRST thing to do with a Canadian visiting here: Get lost on the way home from the airport. Wander in the wilds of Northern Virginia. Really. It’s fun as long as you don’t go into the wrong bits of the DC suburbs.
Wonderful! Another compatriot and only an hour north of us! I will feed her Tim Horton’s coffee and Maple Cream Cookies and Coffee Crisp bars and say ‘eh’ a lot to her. Or him.
When’s the wedding? When do we get the new Canadian?
