Stuff you loved that was discontinued.

Dolly Madison, of all companies gave me the old double cross: They discontinued their Carrot Cake snacks.
They were just heavy enough, and not shy with the icing.

Herbal Essence was wonderful (I sent away for a little terrarium they offered for a few bucks! I got once nice keeper, a schleffera (sp?) that grew huge and lived for years.) Every shampoo now smells like cheap rotting fruit. harrumph!

Darvocet - when I was in my 20’s I took one prescribed by my doctor and went downtown, and walked around feeling exactly as though I was walking on a pink cloud of happiness! No pain, either! Good stuff. They said Darvocet can kill you, but at least you’d die happy…

My mother stopped breathing on Darvocet after dental surgery. I was in high school and had to give her mouth to mouth until the paramedics I called came. I think this one was a good call.

Oh, my! I was only jesting, of course I know the stuff was taken off the market because it’s dangerous. (My own mom had a heart attack from Vioxx and it didn’t even make her feel good.) Hope your mom made out OK.

Quaaludes.

Yeah, she did. Thanks! I, on the other hand, was traumatized! Hope your mom is ok, too. Vioxx, all the danger, none of the high.

Only on page one but I doubt anyone else but me still yearns for these.

McDonald’s Cheddar melts. I don’t really do much fast food but I loved these back in the early 90’s.

Patio frozen mexican meals. I believe they still make them but they don’t distribute here in the NE.

The original Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo with the long haired girl on the bottle.
And Tame creme rinse!

I see this in the supermarket all the time.

Campbell’s Soups used to sell frozen chowders-Lobster, Oyster, and Clam-they were great. Haven’t seen them in years.
Then, there was a starnge type of cracker (shrimp flovored)- you dropped these little discs into hot oil, and they blew up into ritz cracker sized things-delicious.
Finally: Schweppe’s bitter orange soda-not sold in the USA anymore-a great alternative to lemon soda when mixing with gin.

There’s some stuff that has the same name, but it seems so changed that it’s as if it had been discontinued. For instance, I remember Underwood’s deviled ham as being quite tasty and meaty. Nowadays it seems to be made up of filler and hot sauce, with a bit of ham thrown in. It seems to be mostly synthetic ham.

The REAL Spirograh - the one with pins and all sorts of cool moving gear parts so you could make cool designs. Nowadays, it’s all “safe” and boring looking.

Solarveil material. Best stuff ever for sunscreen and they don’t make it any more! Finally, I could go outside and not worry about sunburn and not have to be all sticky and gross from topical sunscreens.

Saturn Cars will go down as the big one. I’ll probably never buy another GM car because they took away my favorite car company. My '92 Saturn SL is still going and I hope to have her for many years to come. I still love that car as much now as I did the day I bought her.

I had totally forgotten about Team flakes until mentioned upthread. Those were good!

I tried the Curly Wurly and it’s not the same. It wasn’t bad, but it’s not the same as the Marathon bar.

Like this
or did you mean something else?

Shrimp chips, also called prawn crackers, can be found in a lot of Asian groceries. I love watching them puff up.

I accidentally threw away my hairbrush last week. I couldn’t find the second brush I use when traveling. So I had to reach for the emergency back-up brush, and stopped by the store to pick up a spare or two. No brush. Went to another store…no brush. Went online…it’s not listed as one of the company’s products anymore. I start to panic. I plug in the item number and make into Google and find some online…whew…no…“Not Available at This Time” Argggghhhh!

Now in all my life, I have only consistently used two styles of hairbrush. Our whole family (us girls, at least) had a wonderful plastic brush that, while not trendy, worked extremely well on our thick hair, even when wet. It disappeared in the eighties, but I had a few stockpiled, so I was good for a while while I searched for the Perfect Brush. Which is this one. I bought them for years, loved them, used them until they fell apart. When they got harder to find (always relegated to the bottom right-hand space on the rack of brushes, usually only one in stock) I made sure to have that spare.

So now I’m mad, because I’ve been reading this thread, and searching for a few other things that have disappeared from stores, and I’m feeling old and abused by marketers and truly, the only brush I found that seemed similar, that I was forced to buy while on my trip last week, fell apart after two days! So I stopped at Kmart, and found ONE of the smaller size…bought it. Stopped at Discount DrugMart…they had two! Score…but the shelf tag had a blue star, which means discontinued! Oh, no! I then went to ANOTHER DrugMart…they had FOUR! and a coupon for buy one, Get one free! but I could only use one coupon…but it’s okay…these things cost $1.99. I grab two more flyers as I go out the door, and head to the next DrugMart…but I’m nearly broke, the coupon expires in 24 hours and payday is four days away! I buy two more brushes, for $2.14. Today on the way home I hit another DrugMart, they only have two brushes anyhow, so I score two more! Now I have a shoe box full of twelve brushes, and one new one that is in use! I like to have two in use at once, which generally last me about three years. If I cut back to one brush every two years, I’m good for about 24 years, which will get me to age 78. But wait…My mom uses the same brush (because, if you remember, we all use the same brush) and hers is a couple years old now…she’ll need at least one more…so I’m going back to two DrugMarts on payday and buying the rest that were on the hooks.

My daughter says it doesn’t become crazy-hoarding until I hit 24…and then had the nerve to ask me to send her one. I posted a picture on Facebook…my son said I was acting like Elaine in Seinfeld with the Sponges. I hesitate to ask my sister in Omaha is she’s still using the same style brush because what if she wants one? Or three? But at least I can sleep at night now and don’t feel anxious…maybe I should go count them again…

Try beauty supply stores. Most of them have that brush, not the kmart cheap ones but the same style that will cost a bit more and last forever.

Sunshine Lemon Cooler cookies (the sort of spherical ones covered in powdered sugar,) and Nabisco? Lemon Thins (the thin flat ones with the dark brown edges.) If either of these cookies were available and even half as good as I remember, I would happily blow my diet all to hell by eating a box or two.

Campbell’s Pepper Pot Soup. The bastards quit manufacturing it.

That reminds me of Campbells Fiesta Tomato soup. Not so good for eating but made the best fajitas ever!

SoBe Adrenaline Rush. Best tasting energy drink ever. It was a pleasant grapefruit flavor, not a condensed Mountain Dew flavors like most the others (or the handful-of-different-flavored-jellybeans taste that is Red Bull)

Also, Coke Blak was awesome, though a bit pricey. The coffee-coke flavor was uniquely delicious. Sometimes I’ll mix extra strong coffee and coke (and for real fun, rum) and try to emulate the drink.

My girlfriend mourns the loss of some chocolate graham cracker sticks. I tell her just to get teddy grahams, but she complains that they’re too expensive and have a different texture.

I don’t know if this will be helpful to y’all, but there’s a place in Vermont I get a catalog from, called The Vermont Country Store which specializes in discontinued items. I bought 3 bars of Lifebuoy soap from them once. Never again! Boy that stuff smells!!! No wonder it’s a deodorant soap! All you smell is the soap’s odor!

But they have plenty of other things too.

Not spam and I’m not paid for this endorsement.
