I saw a guy yesterday, maybe 14, 15, riding a trick bike down the sidewalk, with a butt in his hand. I thought, “Man if I could just grab you, shake some fucking sense into you! You think you’re cool and edgy and whatthefuckelse and I just see you heading down a road that will lead you to the greatest test of your ENTIRE LIFE (quitting) or your death.”
Kids smoke because it is still cool and rebelious. All of these ads that tell kids that smoking kills you don’t do any good. Somehow, we have to push the idea that smoking is uncool and that only conformist wannabes smoke.
I know folks who started smoking at the age of 12 or 13. I started when I was about 19. I was able to quit before those who started sooner. Kids who smoke are in for a rough road ahead.

Smoking to be “cool” is pretty much the definition of conformist wannabe.
You too can be this pretty so please continue to smoke. Help support the “beauty” industry.
What the hell. If they want to smoke let them.
Let people make there own choices. I mean, sheesh, cigarrete smokers are almost treated like criminals.

I didn’t say “don’t”, I asked “why”.
Don’t lecture me on choice until you learn how to intrepet what you read.
Kids under 18 who smoke are criminals in must communities. So are those who provide (sell or give) tobacco to them.
Why do you hate kids so much that you would encourage them to smoke?
We are not treating them as if they are criminals. We are treating them as if they are being manipulated by a multi-million dollar industry into starting a deadly addiction.
And what might that be?
This is not some insidious plot dreamed up by the bad guys from the tobacco industry.
Look. Weren’t you a teenager once? Whenever you tell a teen not to do something- that only the bad kids do that sort of thing- you can 100% guarantee that legions of teens will then pursue it with great enthusiasm.
And yes the tobacco-barons know this which is why they have no problem putting out those public service announcements denouncing the evils of cigarette smoking.

This is the most absolutely shocking post I’ve read all day! I must say, sir, I am astounded at you!
…Really! Mistaking the word “there” for “their,” on the SDMB of all places? Is nothing sacred??? 
People smoke because it is (or will shortly be) great fun, you fucking idiots. Just like people enjoy eating pizza or jerking off, they are thinking for themselves and think, “hey, this is fun!” Fuck you for trying to criminalize it, you fucking devils. Yes, “fuck” is my current most useful word.
Dense? You have to be fucking stupid! There’s way too much factual info out there on the ills of smoking to ignore. There’s no way to deny it. There’s only one way to describe smoking, and I don’t want to repeat myself anymore.
And these kids are killing their non-smoking friends and others around them by blowing smoke in their faces and encouraging them to smoke.
Do you think multi-million dollar industries exist because manipulative advertising doesn’t work? Between television, radio, newspaper and magazine ads, peer pressure from those who have already been influenced by the same, and assholes who think that smoking is some sort of ghod-given “freedom” we are trying to cheat the kids out of, we are damn lucky more kids aren’t smoking today. Not some insidious plot? You are absofuckinglutely right. It’s just business as usual.

And the more you preach this message -which is a bit condescending to assume they don’t actually already know this- the more you reinforce that smoking = anti-establishment = Fuck You and Your Authority = This is the perfect way to rebel.
