I find the whole thing very hard to believe. Anybody with a concealed carry permit is going to have a gun ready and loaded when he’s at home. I can just imagine some macho man hearing a noise in the living room, and frantically going from safe to safe, assembling his gun.
But the reason I came here was to post this:
http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/06/26/Jackson-boys-deaths.html
Hell, man, I’ve had a concealed carry permit and not actually owned a pistol. Given I live in the suburbs and commute through west Philly, I don’t even need to imagine to know a scenario where I don’t feel like I’d need a loaded gun at home but might when I’m out and about.
Sorry, I guess I should have said anybody with a concealed carry permit who shoots dogs with his pistol.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the odds that he’d be attacked by a dog after he had gone to the range and bought some bullets.
Easily explained:
Thats not really stupid gun news, its just tragic. Some ccw shot himself in the dick while cleaning his gun is stupid gun news. Children engaging in murder/suicide (or perhaps accidental shooting/suicide) is just tragic.
I think racism probably correlates better with conservatives than it does with gun nuts.
What are the defining characteristics of a “gun nut”? Are there any, outside of an irrational and unreasonable affection for firearms?
Back in the Days of Darkness, when Nixon declared it duck season on students, I had some severely lefty acquaintances who armed themselves as best they could against “The Man”. He never arrived, and I’m not sure if they were relieved or disappointed, I kept my distance and my own counsel. But they weren’t “gun nuts”, they were just nuts.
Anyone who owns a gun, would own a gun, thinks it should be legal for anyone to own a gun, doesn’t vote for Obama, criticizes Obama for any reason, or thinks that public policy should be made based on facts and reason rather than by a contest for who can cry the hardest, is a “gun nut,” based on how the term is used.
I am using the term gun nuts loosely to refer to anyone on the gun rights side of the debate. just as I loosely refer to gun control advocates as gun grabbers (particularly if they think that an AWB has any sort of merit).
For the love of Og, will you please please quit it about the fucking, goddam AWB! The fate of Western Civilization does not depend on the fucking AWB!! AAAAAaaaaarrrgh!
Personally, I define a “gun nut” as the intersection of “really REALLY likes firearms for everyone (sometimes, “everyone politically/culturally similar to themselves”)” and “really REALLY thinks they will have an actual justified NEED to discharge a firearm at a living target (outside of a hunting context) at some point in a normal American lifetime”. (I say “normal” because the one circumstance in which I carry a pistol is “hiking in bear country”, which is not “normal” but not really “nutty” either, IMHO).
The “unreasonable affection for firearms” guys, they’re about as collectively “nuts” as any other hobbyist with a somewhat dangerous focus (like car/motorcycle collectors, or those really serious model rocketry guys).
Right? He’s a real Johnny one-neuron.
Maybe I was being a mite harsh. Cramp in my chi.
Do you live in Oz? Because pretty much every post of yours involves a straw man.
Then perhaps you should get your fellow gun grabbers to stop trying to pass an AWB as the crown jewel of your gun control agenda.
The gun nuts didn’t try to pass an AWB, the gun grabbers did and it colors every attempt by gun grabbers to pass any sort of gun control for the forseeable future.
Now, when idiots like Wayne LaPierre makes ridiculous claims about Obama coming for our guns during the re-election campaign (even though he did NOTHING during his first term to abridge gun rights), we can’t just point and laugh because the gun grabbers made Wayne Lapieere into an oracle. Good job guys, you manged to give someone like Wayne LaPierre credibility.
Yeah, guys like that exist … and the other gun owners just point and laugh at them. We call them mall ninjas. Their numbers have shrunk significantly since the advent of easily accessible internet porn.
I probably have an “unreasonable affection for firearms” but I don’t think I live under the sword. I don’t think I am going to need a firearm at a moment’s notice, but I do think some people will. I don’t think I can reasonably worry about home invasion, but I think some people can. I don’t think I will have to deal with riots and looting but I think some people will. I don’t think that our democracy will turn into a tyranny but one day it may.
I don’t think you will win the lottery, but some day you might. Should you buy a ticket every week?
This is just the defense of tyranny part you are responding to, right? Not the rest of it, right?
I don’t think lottery is a good analogy. I think single premium insurance is a better analogy.
So your gun pays interest while you are waiting to be mugged?
Its not an exact analogy and its closer to single premium term insurance but now that you mention it. My gun collection has appreciated in value.
