Wait, they’re not saying that licensing might have some sort of measurable effect on gun violence are they? Is it possible that it might even have more of an effect than banning rifles with collapsible stocks and bayonet lugs?
It’s always nice to see the real world continue to vindicate my views on gun policy.
“Nice” ain’t a word that comes to mind in this connection.
I missed the part where charging people who are guilty of negligent homicide with second degree murder had some sort of positive effect on the frequency of people negligently killing others. ![]()
BTW, this is not the sort of licensing you were talking about (frankly its not the sort of licensing I was talking about either), it is effectively universal background checks for gun purchases in Missouri (apparently, Missouri criminals aren’t smart enough to go one state over to buy their guns), there is no safety training and the licenses are only good for 30 days.
Minnesota police groups sue NFL over gun ban:
“The National Football League has been slapped with a lawsuit by two Minnesota law enforcement organizations challenging its authority to prohibit off-duty officers from bringing guns into stadiums.”
That will be interesting, if a private business cannot control gun possession on its own premises. Why not let the free market decide? If you don’t like their policy, don’t buy a ticket. Off duty cops have no constitutional right to attend NFL games.
Note to self: Put down game console remote before answering the door. Probably better not hand it to one of the kids.
Some would require the family to prove there was no gun.
Today’s token DGU: An elderly woman uses a firearm to successfully drive off a man who was demanding to be paid for work he’d done for her.
That link doesn’t prove your point.
He has a point? Well, that’s a refreshing change.
NRA supporters should be happy about this little piece of news:
Guns To Surpass Car Accidents As Leading Cause Of Deaths Among Young People
Sales are up!
Well, isn’t this to be expected? As of 2009 the US had about 50M more firearms than automobiles.
You guys hate it when car analogies are made anyway.
Seriously, you can’t make this shit up.
I just shot myself: The Musical
In my state, that’s technically a misdemeanor of the first degree as I read the statutes. The Florida statutes appear to say the same thing if he was in an area zoned as residential.
This is the part where I gripe about enforcement of existing firearms law. A thousand bucks and a year in the pokey would serve as a nice little incentive to check your goddamn chamber before fucking around with your gun. Especially given the circumstances of just getting out of a safety course, NOT clearing the firearm properly appears to me to be negligent in the extreme.
Sigh, hasn’t this blatant misuse of statistics been debunked yet? Given that you can only use one gun at a time, do you really think that the number of guns owned is actually the correct statistic? Is someone who owns 20 guns 20 times more likely to be involved in a shooting than a person who owns one? Aren’t you on the side that says guns don’t kill people, people (with guns) kill people. Also given the fact that people spend far more time driving their car than they do using their gun, counting numbers of guns versus number of cars tell us nothing about which is safer.
Actually I doubt it would. Every one of those people are convinced that they are being a responsible gun owner right up to the point that they are not. So deterrence is unlikely make a lick of difference.
I’m just curious but what caused that precipitous decline in auto deaths among minors in 2007 and 2008. I don’t recall any great safety features that were rolled out in those years. I don’t recall and huge cultural shift, legislative change of enforcement increase. And, what happened between 1994 and 1999 that caused such a dramatic drop in gun deaths for that age group? I don’t recall any great cultural shift or safety feature at that time (I suppose there was the AWB but its hard to point to the AWB as a reason that deaths largely caused by handguns would drop so dramatically).
As for gun deaths, they are declining also just not as fast. The gross number of guns matters if you are talking about kids accidentally happening upon guns and accidentally shooting themselves or each other. Seeing as how the graph seems to be including all people under 26 and the number of gun deaths have been relatively stable, it seems to me that this article is just pointing out the huge drop in auto deaths in recent years.
He used to want the death penalty for accidentally killing someone while hugging them because your guns wasn’t in a holster and the trigger caught on something (and as far as I know, he still does).
Who said anything about the death penalty? I wouldn’t mind locking someone who has that combination of abject incompetence and carelessness and desire to have a gun away for the rest of their life, just to improve the odds I’m not downrange when said genius next leans on the trigger.
