Stupid Gun news of the day (Part 1)

Hah, yeah, I regrettably know from experience not to try to bluff your way out of a confrontation with an obviously deranged individual by showing them that you are armed. It does not help. Attempt to de-escalate by whatever means you can and keep the piece hidden unless and until you actually need it.

Well there always is the off chance he really was an Ebola-infected, ISIS-supporting Antichrist…

In other words… a Democrat!

It’s important to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

It might be just as important to keep them out of the hands of morons, like Jose Canseco.

A good reason (1 of many) to maintain gun ownership is due to the new pc thinking that the terrorists have a right to go kill US soldiers on foreign lands and come back here and have the same rights that our military has fought for us to keep. Once a person choses treason they should no longer be entitled to the same constitutional rights as peaceful Americans. They should no longer have a right to re-enter the US with a US passport.

Who is going to sort out the traitors from the patriots? US Customs? Do they get a hearing? What if you have the same name as a traitor? You really want to give the government the power to declare you persona non grata at the border without due process?

We should only have Constitutional rights when we are peaceful? Holy shit!

On the other hand, having carte blanche to do as you please when people are unruly or uppity sure would be more attractive to authoritarians or fascists, so there’s that.

A question about the Gabrielle Giffords shooting:

Recently one of the shooting survivors, Mary Reed, joined the call for Kroger stores to ban gun carry. She claimed that the shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, had open carried inside the Safeway for fifteen minutes before shooting Giffords in the parking lot (Arizona has no carry requirements).

Editorials on several pro-gun sites claim this is a fabrication: that neither store videos nor interviews with people who saw Loughner in the store revealed any visible gun.

Someone’s a big fat liar. Who?

Link to her words for the clueless.

Got a link to these pro-gun sites and the evidence they offer up? As far as I know the security footage hasn’t been released to the public.

They cite the account of the shooting and the minutes leading up to it in a NY Times article: Video Captured ‘Calculated’ Gunman in Tucson Shooting - NYTimes.com

So one guy who saw the video says that the gun was at Loughner’s side right before the shooting, and assumes it was hidden prior to that. And the article mentions nothing about him open carrying.

I’ll say that if the pro-gun sites are claiming that Loughner definitely wasn’t open carrying to the point where they feel comfortable calling an eyewitness and a victim a disgusting liar, they’re overstating their evidence by a substantial amount. On the other hand, that link makes a good point – I don’t know how someone would holster a pistol with a 33 round magazine, so I’m inclined to raise an eyebrow at the claim that he was open carrying in a conventional sense. Overall, I’d say it’s inconclusive and I wouldn’t feel comfortable declaring either side a winner. Mary Reed may be lying, or she may not really understand “openly carrying” in this context, or she might be misinformed, or she may know something that the general public doesn’t know.

Dad should go to jail.

Why assume only a Dad is at fault, do you know Mom wasn’t involved in some way?

Law of averages.

What the hell is WRONG with people? I owned firearms for years, and never left it anywhere that a child could get hold of it. Never. My parents had firearms, and we weren’t able to get to them, either. And even if we had, they certainly weren’t loaded.

Good grief. I’m just flabbergasted (in addition to being saddened) by the stupidity of some people.

Convicted felon with gun in southern gun-happy state murders teenager.

See, even if there is a law on the books ( cite mentions a charge of “possession of a firearm by a convicted felon” ), hell man, it don’t matter.

Cuz, yanno, Merrikka. And as the NRA is fond of pointing out, the rights of people to shoot guns far outweighs the rights of middle schoolers to sit in a hotel room without being murdered.

Open Carry activist who rallied at Target and other businesses arrested for double murder

Oddly enough, the shooter was a woman. Not the typical beer-gut, pickup driving, redneck yahoo that gun proponents are usually depicted as. Apparently she was already regarded as mentally unstable.

Sadly, any movement will attract a fringe of psychos. It’s like judging the Hippies of the 1960s by Charles Manson.

But she was not a criminal when she bought the gun – in fact, she is still not a criminal, since she has not been convicted of anything, so far. No one is a criminal, until they get caught.

She was known to be mentally unstable and was allowed to own firearms? Isn’t that exactly the problem?

Besides, this seems like typical gun advocate thinking. Gun owners are perfectly safe. When they’re not, they were always obviously not appropriate gun owners.

Um, there’s at least one key, fundamental difference. Can you spot it?
