Stupid Gun news of the day (Part 1)

I didn’t think anyone was using thoughts and prayers unironically anymore. It just means “dead people don’t matter to me.”

I agree, or at least sold to a reputable gun dealer in the area and allowed to be resold.

And fuck that guy’s father. I could see him asking for the guns because there was some monetary value there, but FFS your son has already shown signs of being unstable and unable to have weapons, why on Earth would you allow him to have them back?

I also agree that the Dad is almost as culpable as his son, I hope there is some provision under the law where he can be heavily prosecuted criminally, and hopefully he’s got some assets that the families of the deceased can go after civilly.

I mean. the law (FBI) did what it was supposed to do and it should have ended there with the son being unable to legally purchase or possess firearms. But HIS FATHER gave them back and destroyed the process! Ugh!

And I am nominally pro-gun ownership, but if the laws aren’t going to work and have such an obvious loophole then CHANGE THEM.

I just heard a report that the shooter at the Waffle House was a SovCit.

Amen.

He claimed to be, but it is not clear whether he meant gold-fringe-flag level. Also, he was being stalked by Taylor Swift.

Is that why he was running around naked?

Wonder if his ever-so-responsible dad is too? That would explain a lot.

He was wearing a jacket, so the news keeps saying he was half-naked. Could we then say he was half-assed or that he went off half-cocked?

This is your AR-15, this is your gun.

Too soon, I know.

He was obviously a fan of the Naked Gun movies.

So cool that an unarmed black man stopped the armed white guy. So much for the notion that only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. So great that the shooter was a right wing whack job. We have more to fear from white right wingers than we do from Muslims.

As for “it’s too soon to be politicizing this”, shove that thought up your ass. Shootings happen so frequently that there will NEVER be enough time between them to meet your deranged criteria of when to talk about guns.

That was actually very refreshing. It’s usually other way around, the armed white guy stopping an unarmed black guy.

Both the Washington Post and NY Times said that the gunman was naked except for his jacket, which he lost during the struggle. After the shooting, he apparently went back to his apartment to get a pair of pants and a pistol. Half naked and all crazy.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

That would be a cheapo safety. In better designed weapons the safety prevents the hammer/striker dropping or the firing pin from hitting the cartridge.

So it turns out that the White House thing was the SECOND time he’d had his guns taken away. There was an earlier incident where the asshole father took them away “when Travis was having problems”. Problems you say? See if this isn’t a HUGE red flag:

Reinking was living in an apartment above his father’s business, a crane-rental company in Tremont, Illinois. An employee at the business called the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office in June 2017 to report that Reinking came down from his apartment wearing a pink dress and holding a rifle, an incident report states.
The employee told police that Reinking yelled, “Is this what you f—ing want?” before he threw his rifle in his vehicle’s trunk and left.

and this:

Later that day, the Tremont Police Department responded to a call at a public pool, according to another incident report. The pool director told the responding officer that a man in his 20s barged into the pool wearing a pink women’s housecoat, the report states. The man dove into the pool, took off the coat and swam around in his underwear. When he got out of the pool, he shouted at lifeguards that he was a man and exposed his genitals to them, the report states.
The rifle stayed in the vehicle and no one at the pool asked to press charges, the officer said in the report. “This is an informational report showing the state of mind of Travis Reinking,” the report said.

Are you fucking kidding me?

He was living in Tennessee? I thought he was from Illinois.

He may have moved due to a new job or something (one he didn’t even show for on the first day, I think) but yeah, originally from Illinois. There were PLENTY of signs dude was mentally unfit to drive a fucking car, let alone have firearms. System did it’s job, system and father failed, people died.

This makes me more furious than a lot of the other shootings due to how blatant the signs leading up to it were, and that he had firearms his Dad KNEW he had no business having. They should share a cell for life.

Yeah, he moved to Tennessee. He had stolen a BMW from a dealership in Nashville and left it in his apartment complex’s parking lot. They found the key fob in his apartment.

One story I saw said that the father returned the weapons because he wanted to move to another state. It was written just in that way, so it was not quite clear which “he” wanted to move.

He had been here long enouth to get an apartment. that tells me that he came to town with a bit of money or credit.

James Shaw, who disarmed him, may not think of himself as a hero. He likely didn’t intend to be a hero, but when it was over, his actions meant that more people got to go home. In my book, that was heroic.

I’m relieved that the shooter has been caught. My local hospital was on lockdown and schools were on lockout. I was very cautious when walking the dog, even though I live 20 minutes from the scene. Personally, I hope his father is prosecuted to the full extent of the law and faces severe civil suits.

Frankly, I wonder what kind of fucked up spin that the NRA will try to put on this one.
