For a given value of “fine”. It’s possible to not have a life-threatening wound and still be missing a chunk of one’s face or skull.
Wow, this is not helping with the bus driver shortage.
So, I love to read the comments. My favorite two:
“Black people” - we don’t know who the bus driver is, but the shooter is as white a person as lives in Minnesota (and those folks can be very white). See the photo in this link.
“If the school bus driver had been armed this would not have happened.” - because the 78 year old driver (with one student on board) would have opened fire first when Mr Lilly pulled his weapon?
Well, the logic is unassailable. Back in the day when men could wear guns in holsters freely on the street, gun violence was NEVER a problem.
Lilly claims he was firing in self defense, even though he got out of his car and walked up to the bus.
The shooter’s name is Lilly, and ge’s caucasian. So the police report reads “Suspect: Lilly, White”?
In fairness, he apparently didn’t open fire until the bus turned on its signal and started to slowly pull back into traffic.
Why isn’t this in the Happy Happy Good Gun Stories thread?
(1) The hero stood his ground successfully. He’s not one of these libtards who will stand aside when the caravan of terrorists arrives.
(2) He disabled the perp, but didn’t kill him. The gun-grabbers won’t be able to add this success story to their nasty “40,000 gun deaths and counting” narrative.
(3) The schoolchildren on the bus were able to witness American values in person. They learned more that day than in a week of libtard lies about climate change and “man is a monkey.”
This does not seem correct, based on the video. The shooter stopped his car in the left lane (traffic was very slow), got out, walked around the pickup behind him, and shot at the bus. Accounts say that he fired shots before walking past the pickup, but you can definitely see at least two muzzle flashes while he is right in front of the bus. He then walks over to the door of the bus, perhaps shouts at the driver, and walks back in front of it, at which point you can see the bus start to move toward the next lane. There is traffic stacked up behind, so they were not off the road.
So apparently we have a new mass shooting in *another *place called Aurora.
Only five people died. It’s too soon to discuss guns. Thoughts and prayers.
It’s so easy to give those Republican talking points. So much harder to find the balls to stand up to the Russia/NRA lobby.
#(Place Name)Strong.
Heh. After Hurricane Irma devastated St Martin, I designed an SXMStrong tattoo. It’s been close to two years and I haven’t actually gotten my new ink yet.
I’m putting this here because I’m not sure where else to put it.
From “Man accused in Aurora mass shooting had been convicted for beating girlfriend with baseball bat” from The Washington Post:
Wait, what? A felony record doesn’t show up on a criminal-background check? What do the words “criminal-background check” even fucking mean?!? I would think everyone from the NRA to the Brady Campaign would agree that a criminal-background check should discover someone’s, uh, what’s the phrase? You know, his “background of having committed crimes”. Jesus.
Didn’t you know?
A background check has nothing to do with crimes or violence.
It just makes sure that you can make a nice pose with the gun, in front of a scenic background.
Here you go. Now, that’s a background, check!
My suspicion is that, since his felony conviction was in Mississippi, and he applied for (and passed a background check for) a FOID in Illinois, that he managed to slip through the cracks.
If that is, in fact, what happened, it’d mean that it’s possible to pass a background check simply by moving states, at which point the background check system is broken.
A guess:
It looks like the conviction was in 1994 in MS. The background check is probably performed using the FBIs Interstate Identification Index.
Currently all states participate in the III, and also submit fingerprints for felony arrests (and others) and dispositions to the FBI. That has not always been the case, though.
For older records that exist in a state prior to that states participation in III a “nation-wide” background check may miss that older record due to the fingerprints not being catalogued in the index. I suspect that is the case here. The record exists, but III doesn’t “know” about it.
The record could be found, but that would require an additional check and would also depend on the person requesting the license to indicate that there is a reason to check a particular state.
ETA:
No longer, though. It has more to do with the age of the record that the fact it was in another state. Anything in the last 20 years or so should show up regardless.
Well, we wouldn’t need this “background check” system if we’d ban firearms. Don’t make 'em, don’t sell 'em, melt down the ones we have.
Timothy was operating an unlicensed daycare out of his home when one of the children came upon his gun and, of course, shot a couple other of the children. One suffered a fractured collarbone, the other lost an eye and was comatose for a week or so. This was in September of '17.
Timothy was given 2 years probation, with the understanding that he is to be promoting gun safety in that time.
Seriously? That’s an insult to the mothers.
But this begs a question, does the mothers know that it is an unlicensed daycare? That says a lot.
