Nah, the shop owner was defending himself. The 78-yr-old shooter had never even mentioned he was unhappy with his service 2 years earlier, he just showed up one day and started shooting.
I’m afraid the second guy may only have carried the gun for protection. This feud had been going on for some time and he had good reason to fear the customer, from what I understand.
I feel bad for him if that is in fact what happened. The customer was an asshole in need of anger management.
Sort of ninja’d but with slightly different information. I’d read the car repair that the customer was angry about was from two years prior and they’d been arguing about it.
“But according to police, he wasn’t satisfied with the work that was done, which he felt ‘was inadequate, and he believed he was overcharged.’ Weirdly, he never returned to Stout’s to complain about the work.”
Either way, self-defense.
Agree.
This happened Thursday (Sept. 28th), but I haven’t seen it here anywhere:
Sheriff’s official IDs suspected shooter in violence at planned site of Oñate statue
Rio Arriba County in northern New Mexico is planning to reinstall a statue of Don Juan de Oñate, a significant and controversial conquistador. The statue was prudently removed from its original place in 2020, after a protest at a similar statue in Albuquerque during which a MAGAnut shot a protester. The debate about Oñate has been going on here for a long as I can remember; he was responsible for much of the Spanish colonization of New Mexico and, in the process, the brutalization and massacre of much of the m native population. It’s inevitable that when someone decides to display a statue of him, there will be conflict.
In this case, a group of Native American-led protesters was at the site and a small group of counter-protesters was a short distance away. One of the counter-protesters jumped over a short wall, confronted a protester, and then pulled out a handgun and shot him.
Guess what hat he was wearing?
Couldn’t possibly, unless you help with clues…Lemme see, was it red?
Dan
Got it in one! With white lettering.
The thing is, a contentious debate about Oñate has been going on as long as I can remember - at least back to the Sixties, and I’m sure the Pueblo peoples had some pretty firm opinions before the civil rights era as well. The descendants of the settlers and those of the people Oñate abused and murdered (can you tell which side of the fence I’ve landed on?) have been fighting this battle over who gets to interpret history for a long time. But one side actually shooting the other? That’s a MAGA innovation.
Lemme get this straight:
- There’s this swarthy guy crossing the Rio Grande and he’s not even Mexican.
- A damn furriner who can’t even speak 'murican.
- He’s murdering and abusing, brutalizing and massacring red blooded (and skinned) ‘muricans; obviously an illegal. Plus that’s stealin’ our jobs.
- Didn’t vote for Don Juan Jesus Trump.
- Didn’t pay no taxes.
And the MAGAnuts support him?
It does make the point that MAGAs tend to be reactionaries rather than following anything resembling an actual ideology. If ‘woke’ people are against it, they’re blindly for it.
Another supplement on the … legacy of Onate, is from my public school days in Las Cruces, NM.
This opened the year I left for College, and to the predominantly Hispanic / Latino population of town, was considered a popular, and representative choice. Especially since the other two were Las Cruces High School (boring, but inoffensive to everyone) and Mayfield Highschool (boo on them from loyalty) weren’t exactly evocative of the local population.
There’s always some friction at the junctions of a multicultural society, but I’ll grant this was a poor choice made in an effort to be inclusive.
But back to the thread topic, from the article above about the 2020 change:
Also, on Tuesday, about two dozen protesters gathered in front of the district’s administration building to advocate for maintaining the name.
Note - no violence. Gee. I wonder what was different.
Step aside, two girls and a beverage vessel,
Sharing is caring.
I guess an armed society IS a polite society.
The wounded man then gained control of the suspect’s gun and shot him.
Aren’t they both suspects?
Not once he became a good guy with a gun.
Does that town have a shop called “Needful Things”?
“If anyone should object to this Union…”
Well, this is a story I never thought I would read. Can’t believe this wasn’t in Florida.
I’ve officiated a few weddings for friends. Never thought to fire a gun into the air to get everyone’s attention. I always just say, good afternoon everyone.
