In The Line Of Fire lied to us.
Eh, In the Line of Fire is probably pretty close (and yes, I have watched and own the movie!) to accurate, certainly more so than most. It’s a two shot gun, one round in each barrel, and a pretty low powered (enough to do the job at short range through!) round. And it took an obsessive mind and careful, near professional crafting to make happen. I’m still not sold on the system to hit the primer, but it wouldn’t have been hard to make that into something like a tie clip and pass it along as innocuous, like of like the rabbit foot trick (which also seemed a bit of a stretch).
Anyway, just wanted to help with the factual questions, and mention again that the term from the cited article still leaves a wide range of options on the table: un-serialized “ghost gun.”
A common misconception, and incorrect. A ghost gun is a firearm assembled with untracked, unregistered parts. The receiver (main body) of a firearm is required to have a serial number and have a background check to be sold. Receivers can be 3D printed or can be purchased as an 80% complete block meaning that it cannot be assembled into a weapon without machining the remaining 20%. Being a ghost gun simply means there’s no serial # to trace back to it’s origin by traditional means.
You can make a functioning gun with nothing more than a piece of pipe, a rubber band, and a nail. It won’t be a very good gun, and it’ll probably blow up in your hands after a very small number of firings (possibly one), but it’ll probably work at least once.
With machining tools (which are available to hobbyists), you can do a much better job, including something like a replica AK-47 just as good as the ones made by Kalishnakov.
Growing up in NYC in the 50’s, Zip Guns were made with car radio antenna section barrels, a filed down bolt latch for a firing pin, and a rubber band as you mentioned. All held together with black electrical tape.
That’s what always baffles me. What frightens you so much that you feel you have to wear a sidearm 24-7? You have packs of wolves prowling the streets?
Indiana borders Ohio. You know, that place where hordes of immigrants are stealing and eating pets. Somebody has to protect the poor innocent creatures.
You never know when some shit is going to go down
.
I’m a little more alarmed that such a responsible gun owner would forget they were even carrying it while around school children. Surely Law-abiding Responsible Owners would never forget where their weapon is?
I’m also choosing to assume that the homework assignment about flags wasn’t anything pride related, and this moron just freaked out about the stripes on the Greek flag or something (or Wales, clearly related to bestiality!)
A previous post quotes the story as saying she was upset about some same-sex-relationship class assignments (I wanted to say “homework”, but that just sounded wrong).
When my son was in Boy Scouts, he would carry a knife with him for campouts, meetings, etc., and would forget to take them out of his pocket before school. I can almost forgive her for forgetting it’s on her. Almost.
It sounds like that parent is going to be incarcerated and in that case, how does she expect to homeschool her child?
[ I know you made it clear about not actually forgiving them, because of habits, so I’m not criticizing YOU to be clear ]
I can’t. I’m a gun owner with a CCW though I haven’t carried in over a decade, and that training is clear to always be aware, and to be doubly so in areas where carrying is prohibited. I suspect (as in a lot of areas with people doing open carry) that they’re doing so as a political statement, and thus “I forgot” is the all-purpose excuse that they figure LEO (who is supposed to be on their side) will let pass because of … well, that’s already been linked upthread.
People like this is why there’s (legitimate) doubt about the existence of “responsible” gun owners. We do exist, I promise, but the nutjobs shout us out, get the news, and make a mockery of their responsibilities while always shouting about their “rights”. It’s supposed to be both dammit.
Sorry, rant off.
Seconding this rant in all particulars.
Not even close. A camping knife can be used as a weapon but has many legitimate non-lethal purposes. The only reason to carry a gun is that you expect you will have to kill someone.
No, you could need to kill a pack of wolves.
Or intimidate a liberal.
Or maybe a paper target will suddenly appear.
Don’t forget the roving herds of feral hogs!
Ain’t gonna take one of those out with a,handgun!
