stupid question:help me upgrade my openGL so I can play this videogame

Ok, I admit it, I am not the computer savvy individual I was at the age of 14. I like to think that I am, but in reality at about the age of 16 I decided that I wanted nothing to do with technology and abandoned all thoughts of things modern and technical for about 5 years. In that time things changed a lot and my memory grew fuzzy, so I don’t know much anymore, and what relevant info I did know is all very fuzzy. (All the above is an apology for the immensely stupid question I am about to ask.)

So I decided I want to buy a PC videogame, so I don’t wake my new roommate by playing my playstation in the living room at 2 am. Picked up Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it looked cool and was only $4 on amazon marketplace brand new. I installed it and tried to play it, but it said that my computer only has openGL 1.1 and needs at least 1.4 or higher. I assumed that this was software I could download, but damned if I can find the update anywhere on the open GL webpage. I am assuming this is because I am blind to anything I REALLY want to find, but thought maybe it wasn’t something I could just download an update for. So here I am, hat in hand, shame faced and asking, what do I need to do to play this videogame? I am positive it is super simple, but I just can’t work it out.

This must be how my Grandmother feels when she asks me to come over and show her how to work the DVD player.

Just curious - what is your current video card? You might need to download the newest driver from either Nvidia or ATI, to get Open GL functionality.

What’s your video card’s specs? I second the updating of your video card drivers too. Usually, it is bundled with the drivers.

OpenGL is supported by all modern cards and all current driver versions. So find out what kind fo card you have, go to their website and download the latest drivers for it.

ok, more of me being dumb. Maybe nothing but I want to be sure I am doing everything right before I do anyhting. I seem to have nVidia GeForce2 mx/mx 400. I went to their page to install the new drivers and it said to make sure that I had uninstalled all the former drivers first. So I went to add/remove and wasnt able to find any previous drivers. I just want to be sure before I dl anything that I am not going to screw my computer. Is there anyone who can walk me though this just a bit to ease my fears of breaking something I am quite clearly not capable of fixing again.

You probably need the detonator destroyer, it removes all traces of previous versions of NVidia detonator drivers.

this is probably one of the best sites on the net for NVidia and ATI drivers and utlities.

Make sure that you look at the read me file before using this uninstaller to see which cards it applies to.

To remove the previous Nvidia drivers, Right Click on My Computer > Select Properties > Hardware Tab > Click on Device Manager Button > Display adapters > Right click on the Nvidia Geforce yada yada > Properties > Driver Tab > Click uninstall.

Or you could just install the new Nvidia drivers over the old ones. I have done that lots of times, with Nvidia cards, and haven’t had a problem.
