Stupid question here.

What is this board’s consensus on the show “Mythbusters?”

I’m not much for the scientific aspects, but I like it when these two blow up stuff. At least that’s how I feel.

one of the best shows on TV!!!

They should rename it “The Snopes Show.”

I like them. They have no regard for saftey to themselves! (hair burning from eyebrow too)

hehehe

Wow, and to think I was actually worried about posting this question!

Could have posted a better thread title though :dubious:

Yeah, I know. I was a little nervous bringing up the topic of a showa about mythbusting on a board dedicated to the premier mythbusting website in America.

Next time, I’ll put it on a better topic.

I like it, but I think it sometimes goes beyond the realm of the myths they try to bust. The one that sticks out in my mind: on the “exploding toilet” myth, after deciding that it didn’t work the way the myth described they proceeded to spend the next ten minutes filling their test chamber with gasoline, gunpowder, etc. until it finally exploded. I understand the feeling (“Hell, the fire department’s here anyway, and I wanna see something go boom!”), but in the end the final conditions had nothing to do with the myth.

I’m not saying the show isn’t entertaining - it is! - but I guess the anal-retentive in me would like to see more of the scientific method or something.

That’s because they proved that the myth couldn’t happen under the original conditions. They then procede to push the conditions until the myth “could” happen. For the exploding toilet, they showed that an aerosol product could not blow up a toilet (busting the myth) and then decided to find what it would take to do it (lots of gunpowder). It shows how far off-base some myths really are.

The big question I have is about the running/walking in the rain. On the show they determine it’s better to walk, but an article by Cecil Adams says it’s better to run. Who do we believe, Mythbusters or Cecil?

Cecil.

Great show! I love the barely controlled chaos they create and the whole “well, we’re here may as well blow it up” attitude. And they really go the distance. Remember when they buried one of them alive just to see how long you could survive in there? Yeah, they took precautions but you couldn’t have gotten me into that coffin!
