Stupid radio station names.

Those of us in the SF Bay Area just got a brand spanking new country radio station: “The Wolf.”
It’s among the stupidest names for a radio station I’ve heard since, weel, “The Bear.”
We’ve got “The Bone” (107.7), “Mix 106” (106.5), “Alice” (97.3), “Live 105” (105.3), and a variety of others, but any station that calls itself “The <anything>” makes me cringe.
I prefer local stations that go with their call letters like “KRTY” and “KFOG*.”

What lame-ass names do your local stations call themselves? )Don’t even metion “Star.”)

*: Although entirely local, they use 104.9 KFOG in San Francisco and 97.7 KFFG in the South Bay. They are forgiven for 10 at 10 and their willingness to play anything you request.

Anything like MIX or FOX… actually, that’s at least half of 'em.

Hey, we have an Alice here, too. They suck, though.

Our local rock station goes by “The Dot,” because their call sign is KDOT. That’s a gray area, IMO - they got the “The” from their call sign. I’m glad, however, that I’m not the only one who is annoyed by this trend of “The RadioStation.”

I don’t think I’d listen to a radio station called “The Wolf” ( ) but here we had/have a station called “The Breeze”.

Never listen to that, either … :stuck_out_tongue:

I know of that station because an in-law lives in Reno, ours is owned by, and has the same playlist as Mix106, except the morning show for Alice doesn’t play music at all and as an average IQ ~100 points higher than said Mix morning show.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I moved from Seattle to get away from “The Wolf,” which overtook my favorite radio station, “The Buzz,” but now I find it’s stalking me. Aggh.

Maybe I should get a restraining order?

Looks like it’s everywhere, Red Barchetta. No escape from The Wolf …

Seems like every “smooth jazz” station is named something like “The Oasis”.

Also, there’s far too many classic rock stations named stuff like “The Eagle” or “The Hawk”. A friend of mine told me there’s a station called 95.7 “The Kar” in Amarillo.

I’m so pissed about this. Despite having stupid-name-disease, MAX FM played good stuff. Then with no warning one morning I tune them in and get stupid fucking cuntry shit. I can’t imagine the Bay needing more than one shitkicker station and I know there’s at least one on the dial already.

I hope it dies painfully (but quickly).

Let’s see - in Seattle we have the aforementioned “The Wolf”, and also “Cube” (or KUBE), the Mountain, The End, The Bridge, The Buzz, The Source, The Pulse, The Star, Warm FM, The Point, and Jack-FM.

Tucson, AZ ALSO has "The Mountain ", and it seems to be a clone of the Seattle Station , down to similar (if not identical at times) show names, and a logo with an identical font (and a slightly different shaped mountain graphic)

There was a hard rock station in Chicago about a year ago called “The Zone” which wasn’t that bad as names go. Plus Chicago’s “The Loop” doesn’t count in that theme as it’s named after a well-known downtown region in Chicago, and the station’s call letters are WLUP.

The DC area has George 104.

George??

Weird…

Years ago in San Jose we had a station with the call letters KOME. They were known as “the KOME (pronounced “cum”) spot on your dial”.
Ah, the 70’s . . .

… and the other half are called Sea FM, Triple J, or ABC.

Radio Stations here and in NZ are often known by their callsigns- 3ZB, 4KQ, 2UE, etc- although most of them have a name like Radio (Something) or (Frequency)-(Name).

When I was living in NZ though, there was a radio station called 89.0 The Edge FM, which seemed like a fairly strange name for a radio station (the rest of them usually followed the (Frequency)-(Name)/(Callsign) approach, ie C93FM or 91ZM).

How about a stupid radio name that SHOULD exist, but doesn’t?

The Rollins College radio station in downtown Winter Park, FL, has the callsign WPRK. Their format is, well, college radio. One of my friends noticed that if their format were classic rock they should call themselves “WPRK – The PORK!”

I’m actually surprised there isn’t a radio station with the callsign W-ANK somewhere in the US.

How about some dumb satellite radio names? XM has Fred, Ethel, and Lucy. They’re alternative stations.

WIFE 100.3 FM, of Connersville, Indiana; where they play the Super Oldies.

The first part of my reply disappeared. I noticed “The Wolf” at 100.7, assumed it was from Seattle, and checked it out in my car. The ratio of talk/commercials to music was about 9:1, so I have not listened to it. I don’t understand how commercial radio in the US (or Canada) really works. Same format, owner, etc., just a different dial position depending on the city/market?

Ah-ha.

The Seattle Mountain station isn’t bad at all, though–they seem to play some nice stuff I don’t hear anywhere else.

There’s also a Jack in Victoria and a Jack in Vancouver. Jack’s everywhere.

In the Green Bay, WI area, we have Kicks (or is it Kix?) and The Frog.

When I was in college, there was a station in Minneapolis/St. Paul called “Bob.” Their ads said “turn your knob to Bob.” I don’t think they lasted long.
