In my town there is a university with a radio station. It’s Northern Montana University with KNMC, to be exact, and it’s one of the most spectacularly understaffed ventures in the whole region. They might only have people in there a total of six hours during the whole day on a good day. On a bad day, or between DJs, they do one of three things:
[ul]
[li]Repeat the local NPR affiliate.[/li][li]Shut the rig down and treat us all to dead air.[/li][li]Play a CD on an infinite loop until someone comes up to shut it off.[/li][/ul]
It’s the third this is about. They have some variety of CDs, but not much. It’s usually either ‘Tommy’ or the Very Special Mix CD. ‘Tommy’ is prone to skipping, which is bad: Imagine hours of a completely wedged CD, repeating the same damn sound over and over and over … simply because nobody’s up to fix it.
So they usually play the VSMCD. They’ve played this CD hours on end. It’s played so often I’ve actually trascribed a discography that is probably near-complete:
[ul]
[li]1. Blackhole Sun – Soundgarden[/li][li]2. Fell in Love With a Girl – White Stripes[/li][li]3. Flashlight – Parliament[/li][li]4. Lust for Life – Iggy Pop[/li][li]5. State of Love and Trust – Perl Jam[/li][li]6. Knappy Dreads – Bob Marley[/li][li]7. Start Choppin’ – Dinosaur, Jr.[/li][li]8. I Wanna be Sedated – Ramones[/li][li]9. Oye Como Va – Carlos Santana[/li][li]10. Drain You – Nirvana[/li][li]11. Gimme Some Lovin’ – The Spencer Davis Group[/li][li]12. That’s a Cold Shot – Stevie Ray Vaughan[/li][li]13. Tangled Up in Blue – Bob Dylan[/li][li]14. Rock ‘n’ Roll – Led Zepplin[/li][li]15. 1979 – Smashing Pumpkins[/li][li]16. Ruby Soho – Rancid[/li][li]17. Freedom – Jimi Hendrix[/li][li]18. See Me, Feel Me – The Who[/li][li]19. Higher Ground – Stevie Ray Vaughan[/li][li]20. You Really Got Me – Kinks[/li][/ul]
It’s better than Top 40.
