Stupid things that bug you, or something.

Man, if we each have to justify our little contributions this thread, that would be annoying!!!

I’d be ranting over the saleslady not leaving me alone - if I want any help, I’ll find you. Otherwise, this is a nice, peaceful, not talking shopping trip for me.

Buildings where the “push” and “pull” door handles are identical. Grrrr…

So many things bug me at the movie theater nowadays.

It bugs me that at the ticket counter they hand me a quarter-page advertisement for the snack counter that is only 20 feet away.

It bugs me when they try to upsell me at the snack counter. Really, I’m smart enough to figure out for myself how much popcorn I’d like, and it’s not worth “just a quarter more! :D:D:D” to have enough left to throw away at the end of the movie.

But the ultimate peeve is the people in line in front of me. They go for the upsell EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. :smack:

Ooh yeah, that’s a big one for me. Windows is terrible with this, often you can even see the graphic of the button react to being clicked, but nothing will happen. It really disrupts work flow when you lose confidence in the GUI response.

Asterisks on words that don’t go ANYWHERE.

I’ll second that one. Is there some kind of new fashion where you just stick asterisks on the ends of words because they look cute or something?

People (mostly on Facebook) who repeat the last letter of a word they want to emphasize.

“That puppy is so CUTEEEEEE!”

Reads as “That puppy is so CUTIE,” which sounds stupid.

It’s meant for emphasis, some boards you type an asterisk and it will italicize the word for you, and it carried over to places it doesn’t because people are either too lazy to code properly or those places don’t italicize (or bold, or underline) at all. Twitter for example.

No less annoying though.

When they advertise for a TV show I’m already watching. It’s like “Hey, I’m already watching it! Why do you have to advertise it?” If you made the show good enough, I’ll keep watching it! If you didn’t, all the advertising in the world isn’t going to work!

Or news show advertising, telling me how it’s the most trusted newshow in Northern California, or So-and-So is the most trusted news anchor. C’mon! Who watches a news show based on trust? It’s a given, news outlets and trust don’t go in the same sentence.

'round here, they sometimes do that, but mostly if you say “and that’s it”, they say “anything to drink?” if I haven’t ordered a drink (which I never do as I don’t like fountain soda.)

So I say “and that’s itnothing to drink”, since if I give even the slightest pause between “it” , and “nothing”, they start to ask me if I want anything to drink :smack:

It does actually make it slightly less annoying to me, because I know what mistake they’re making now.

It’s been bugging me long before the Internet was invented. God, that makes me sound old.

But isnt what you’re describing this (asterisks on both sides). That’s cool. I do it myself. It’s when you’re reading along and come to this* and it goes nowhere, I want to weep.

See, and it drives me straight up the goddamn wall when they do bag the gallon jug of milk. The damn thing weighs 10# and the handles on a plastic grocery bag become approximately 0.002" inches wide when you put that kind of weight on them. Whereas the jug itself has a nice wide sturdy handle specifically designed for comfortably carrying that sort of weight. I can carry two gallon jugs in each hand more easily than one jug in a plastic bag that’s slowly sawing my fingers off.

In some boards this is this and this* is this, iirc I could be mixing them up again. I’ll double check one that uses stuff like that later when I’m at my computer. And for places like Twitter you have so few characters you don’t want to use two for emphasis where one will do!

I have noticed it more in fandom or slash places though, or at least from that part of my friends online.

Ha, I was wrong. This is bold and this is italicized, but I do know I’ve seen the single asterisk for emphasis more in fandom friends than anywhere else.

Today’s stupid thing that bugged me: not having a shower at work. The company’s design standards specify an employee shower for our workplace, but that doesn’t count in a leased space. Baby wipes or moist towelettes just don’t cut it after a brisk 30 minute-walk on 80+ degree days.

Or even better, an ad for a show that aired two hours ago! I swear I’ve seen that happen on Bravo or something.

Speaking of Bravo, the wife likes to watch the House marathons on Saturday nights. I can’t stand it because every freakin’ commercial is a promo for some other show on Bravo. And they all end with “Only by Bravo!” You mean “Only ON Bravo???” I don’t get that at all.

And yeah, grocery store baggers in general just piss me off. Don’t they even bother to train them any more?

Another Bravo ad related complaint, those stupid “Coming up after the break” commercials on all of Bravo’s reality competition shows. I am already watching the episode! Why are you telling me what is going to happen next!? One time they actually showed a clip that revealed who the loser of the episode was! WTF Bravo!?

Or when someone jiggles the handle and then knocks on a locked door to a single-person restroom. Um, it’s LOCKED! :smack: Shouldn’t that be enough of an answer for ya?
