Styles that still work

When I was in high school I knew a woman who kept her curls close to her head, like a 1920s flapper. It may have been the early 70s, but damn, it worked on her.

I’ve always had a crush on the Gibson Girl (supposedly sometimes Evelyn Nesbit–check out EL Doctorow’s Ragtime) but she was even older than my grandmother (and trust me, guys, my grandma was OLD). Some looks toss aside their time like a soiled glove. Please suggest others.

Can you (or someone) articulate for me just what constitutes the “style” of the Gibson girl? 'Cause all I’m seeing are heavy eyelids and a whole lotta hair.

I think white long-sleeved button down mens dress shirts still work. My grandfather wore them, I wear them. They’ll go out of style, eventually as all things do, but I’m not holding my breath.

Also, men’s hair, parted on the side and combed over is a look that has lasted for generations - here’s a 1862 photograph of an English doctor in Tasmania. I don’t think this look will ever disappear either.

My wife says that “A-line dresses” will probably always be with us. There will be variations on the theme, of course, but the essential idea will be around. She also thinks that high-heels will be around in one shape or form, regardless of how women complain about them.

T-shirts - A relative newcomer, but far too utilitarian to give up.
