Subject XYZ 101 in U.S. colleges/universities. Why 101?

When I went to MIT 6.01 was the introductory course for EEs, but 6.001 was the introductory EE course for CS majors, course 6, option 3. And they could have shoe horned in a few more 0s if they needed to.
