Sublime's "What I Got": is he kidding?

The opening to What I Got:

Early in the morning risin’ to the street
Light me up that cigarette and I strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason a reason things went wrong
Got to find a reason why my money’s all gone

The opening to Lady Madonna:

Lady Madonna, children at your feet
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet
Who find the money when you pay the rent
Did you think that money was heaven sent

I can see it. Or rather, I can hear it and I’ve always assumed that it was a little slacker homage to those poorly spelled predecessors. I think the opening riff Sublime plays is also reminiscenct of the intro to Lady Madonna.

I did concede that the first verse to “What I Got” sounds strikingly similar to Lady Madonna. I swear I was originally singing the verse to “I Just Wanna Fly” with the chorus of “What I Got,” hence my original statement.

Wow, did they have a modified version for mainstream airplay? I remember hearing the song but don’t remember a bleeped- or blanked-out bit where the m-f would be.

Yeah, he still said “Mother” but the second part was covered by a well timed record scratch. It’s one of the better examples of this being done, most of the time it’s not very organic sounding within the song. However, if you listen to the second version of the song at the end of the CD you can tell that the first version is heavily produced in it’s sound will all the extra samples and such, so the censoring doesn’t really mar the end mix.
