Sucessful and slickly produced musical crap

Ever notice there are some musical artists who are very successful (award-winning, even), but if you try to listen to their work, it’s just a pile of well-meaning, well-produced mush without one exciting or interesting moment in it.

I’m thinking of artists like:

Paul McCartney’s solo work
Barbara Mandrell
KT Tunstall (perfect background music for a shampoo commercial)

I think its easier to list the ones that aren’t. :frowning:

Well, I’d have to disagree about McCartney’s solo work. A lot of it is mush, but to say there’s not one interesting or exciting moment in it strikes me as a huge overstatement.

I can think of a lot of artists to nominate but I’m reluctant. Because if I find them boring, I don’t bother to check out their catalogue in depth, so I don’t really know them well enough to say that they have nothing interesting.

There’s an entire genre of this now known as “yacht rock.”

Of course, one offends many people by calling it “crap,” since they have a great deal of respect for the undisputable technical proficiency and are sincerly reached on an emotional level by the Carpenters, Steeley Dan, Michael Bolton, etc.

Andrew Lloyd Webber. Each of his shows contains one great (or merely good) song, and the rest is mind-numbing repetitive crap. Especially “Sunset Blvd.”

Your thread title perfectly sums up the music of Nickleback.
