On day in the late1950s a scientist appeared on the BBC news and claimed, amongst other things, that 500,000 babies had been killed world-wide by fallout from nuclear testing. I was working in a laboratory at the time. The next day the Chief Chemist gathered us all together and totally ridiculed the idea that our activities as scientists could be endangering the planet.
