This song makes me think of the Dope.
It could easily be Suddenly Cecil
You are my friend.
You do condescend, occasionally but it’s usually good natured.
I feel safe here. Don’t need no makeup, no need to pretend…
You’re right here beside me.
I can speak here and say words I can’t really say anywhere else.
I love this place.
Standing beside me,
Provide me sweet understanding,
Cecil’s my friend. ()
“Somewhere that’s green” (well… different song and not so green)
I always thought that they should have started with 4 girls in the “greek chorus” in the movie. Then, only three… then, only two… then, only one left… then…
It was only a few years ago that I realized that Gina (Tisha Campbell) from the '90s TV show Martin was in that chorus. Also, they had names… Her character’s name in the film was Chiffon.
Life’s given me my share of embarrassing moments. In the top 10 is me riding the Broadway bus in Chicago after renting “Little Shop of Horrors” and a flamboyant gay couple deciding to serenade me with “Suddenly, Seymour” after making out the title thru the plastic bag.
They looked at me expectantly, only to receive: “Err, who’s Seymour?” I hadn’t seen the film yet, and had no idea what they were on about.
I know that the original ending ‘Don’t Feed The Plants’ tested poorly and was replaced. Ya can find it on YouTube now. Does anybody know why the dentist’s second song (I can’t remember the title “If I giggle, it’s only the gas”) was cut from the film?
That’s sad.
The Audrey 2 Plant singing was one of my favorite parts.
In the Lil’wrekkers production they had a very good bass singer doing the part. But, of course, being Community theatre it was nearly as good.
Lil’wrekker is in rehearsal now for “Once upon a Mattress”
She’s not the lead but has a good part.
The girls’ names were Chiffon, Ronette, and Crystal—the names of three girl groups from the 1950s and 1960s.
Suddenly Cecil, Is there to advise me, If I have a question, His answer he’ll pen, Suddenly Cecil, Is more than just answers, If I need to talk some, Cecil’s my friend.
Now, @Beckdawrek , give me some time, and I’ll work on “Somewhere that’s Green.”
Full disclosure: I worked on a community theatre production of Little Shop of Horrors a few years ago. I know that show very, very well.
A message board of our own, Spammers’ IPs are recorded. We can discuss the latest news, Or whatever’s in our head. Opinions and thread games, And a Pit to keep things clean, For over twenty years it’s been growing, It’s somewhere that’s green.
The Straight Dope’s a living tree, It’s truly something special, There’s an atmosphere that exists here, And here we’re glad to dwell. Educational discussions, And silliness completes the scene, For over twenty years it’s been growing, It’s somewhere that’s green.
Best I could do on short notice. What do you think?
I loved that too. It was a really nice low budget old school Sci Fi/Horror flick (with humor too). Totally different tone from the musical it later inspired. It had a real Twilight Zone vibe for me.
It was made for $24,000, and had 3 days of rehearsals immediately followed by 2 days and 1 night of filming. Yes, it only took a couple of days to film the whole thing. It’s remarkable.
