Sugarless Gum and a Perfect Dental Check Up.

I went to my periodic dental exam. And I was surprised to find it was much better than my previous ones. The apparent reason: sugarless gum.

You see, I only brush once a day. I have been discussing the matter with my dentist and hygienist. And they want me to brush more (at least twice a day, of course). Whenever I go there, they have to remove my tartar. And I typically have at least one cavity. But this time I had a near-perfect exam. And they agreed, it was because of my chewing more sugarless gum.

Actually, that wasn’t even my reason for chewing more of it. My gastroenterologist says I may have acid reflux disease. And I read on the internet chewing gum is actually good for that too. A little side note: you have to do it long and often, esp. after you just ate something. I also do it just before I go to bed FYI. Also, apparently it is important the sugarless gum you chew has Xylitol in it.

This isn’t the only bit of preventive advice I have given. As I’ve said in a previous post, dietary fiber prevents hemorrhoids. (“Prevent” is the operative word. If you’re actively flaring, you have to go to the doctor. Don’t even try OTC hemorrhoidal aids–they do nothing. The doctor has to give you hydrocortisone suppositories [which are only available by prescription, of course].) But once gone, fiber (in supplement form, etc.) will keep it away–I have been clear of it for 10 years now, in fact. (And of course fiber has many other health benefits.)

Does anyone else have any preventive advice to share:)?

I just had 7 cavities filled - it sucked, but the nitrous oxide was brilliant. Despite my love for the laughing gas, I think I’ll take up chewing sugarless gum. Thanks for the info!
