Let’s see . . . “The Wookie likes to wield the Force, the Vulcan wants a power source, but that’s no reason why they can’t be friends . . .”
"I’d like to say a word for the Wookie
"His life is hard and rough I do determine
"His fur from scalp to knees
“Is a nest for lice and fleas --”
“I sure am feelin’ sorry for the vermin!”
Again, I don’t think you know anything about recent Worldcons, Amateur Barbarian. They are not turning into Comic-Con or Dragoncon. They mostly have somewhere between 4,000 and 7,000 attendees. They have a nice mix of ages in the attendees. They have a nice mix of literary and media events. Like the regional conventions (I’m mostly familiar with Balticon and Capclave), they serve to attract younger fans and get them interested in literary science fiction. If all non-literary events were banned from Worldcon, it would turn into a much older on average and a much smaller convention. The same is true of the regional conventions. If all non-literary events were banned from them, they would become much older on average and much smaller conventions. The Worldcon and the regional conventions would eventually die out.
"I’d like to say a word for the Vulcan
"With Surak’s way of logic he has gone far
"He lives a quiet life
“Free of hate and greed and strife --”
“Jest don’t let one get near ya durin’ Pon-Farr!”
Anything of Kipling’s that Leslie Fish has set to music would be apropos. See “Hymn to Breaking Strain.” (That’s an especially apt choice after a spaceship has blown up or something.)
