There was a thread about what to do in Kansas City, but I figure a thread with the actual event in the subject might shake a few more folks out of the woodwork.
So what Dopers will be attending?

I’ll be there from Wednesday morning to Sunday afternoon for my first WorldCon.
It looks like The Heinlein Society has delivered the goods-more things to fit into my schedule.
I’ll reach KC tomorrow morning and start working setup in the Dealer’s Room. Which is where I’ll spend most of my time for the rest of the con.
I voted, but I can’t go – maybe next year. I hope everyone has fun!
Is there a list somewhere of where the good room parties are going to be? I know there are some “Official”(no alcohol) parties scheduled for the Convention Center…but I’m betting there are some planned blowouts for various groups at one or more of the con hotels?
Worked MIMO (Move In, Move Out) all day today and will tomorrow, and will be doing AV Club tech for the Hugos and Masquerade.
Czarcasm, there will be a designated party hotel where the various bid parties and other fun times will be held. And they will all be listed in the daily newsletter and on various boards.
If it’s anything like the ChiCons I’ve been to, whole floors are going to be devoted to suites filled with parties to lobby for your vote on the various bids for future WorldCon locations. By tradition, you take the elevator to the top hotel floor, then walk down the stairs to the next floor - because after two floors of parties, you’re not to be trusted with operating highly technical equipment like an elevator.
That’s pretty much the description of every Worldcon party hotel. The only variables are his high is the hotel and how many floors are the parties spread out on.
Thanks. This will be my first con held at a convention center instead of a hotel, so I didn’t know how things were done. BTW, this will also be the first con in over 25 years where I wasn’t running or working for one department or another.
It’s held at the Convention Center, the Conference Center next door, and four hotels. The Convention Center is the Dealer’s Room, exhibits and the Con Suite.
They have a bunch of material, mostly video, that was prepared for the 2007 Heinlein Centennial. Besides the “remastered” 1976 GoH speech (video meh, audio much improved), there are several rare clips and appearances by Arthur C. Clarke and Virginia Heinlein, and a remastered version of the 1994 animated miniseries “Red Planet.” Not sure where they are showing each item, other than the GoH speech*, but it’s all worth seeing if you can.
There’s a long story behind it all - several long stories - but I’m glad it will all reach another big audience.
I would have sent some hard memorabilia as well, but they couldn’t guarantee the security, so. Oh well…
So tired - been at the Con since 9 AM wiring up the video, assembling screens, hanging lights - doing whatever is necessary at the theater for the Hugos and Masquerade.
Redeye from Portland to Kansas City(via Minneapolis)tonight a bit after midnight-take bus to con, get badge and goodies, go to Comfort Inn and drop off bags, then back to con, easy peasy.
Well, that’s the plan, anyway.
Doesn’t 7 hours doing setup in the dealer room. Finish up in the morning. Really should go to bed.
Arrived at con, got badgeandbookandstuffs, walked to hotel which is a thousand miles away to wait to check in in about 45 minutes, then back to con.
Did I mention it’s a thousand miles uphill both ways?
lol.
I’ve never been to a 'Con. They are very expensive by me and you not only have to know when/where the 'Con is, you’d have to front all of the money almost six months in advance just to get inside the door.
Also, most of the worth-while events are Ala-carte extras, which start to really add up. Its like the line waiting to get to the top of the Empire State Building: just $50 more and you can jump another 200 feet ahead in line.
You can do that about 15 times & Still not be on the Observation Deck.
Its on my ‘maybe someday, when money isn’t tight’ list.
Worldcons can be expensive to get an attending membership to, but other than that and your hotel/travel costs, there are no extras. And you can pay at the door for membership, but the earliest you do it, the cheaper it is.
There are gaming cons that charge for each game session you want to take part in, but that is not the setup for worldcons.
Wait, you don’t have to pay extra for the “person x” lecture and again for the “person Y” signing? You don’t have to plan because this person is only there Saturday and that person is only there Sunday… and the ST star is giving a talk at the exact same time that the popular cop show star is signing autographs?
Maybe I’ve just been looking at the wrong ones, because some of those other ones would make you channel Barry Allen to see and do it all.
