Well… friends of ours had their wedding rings engraved with a version of the “one ring” rhyme from LOTR Only theirs was rephrased to make it about love and joining forever in a good way!
Pixilated - if you’re looking for engagement vs. wedding (the “poesy” rings - new term to me - look more like wedding than engagement but what do I know) - i.e. something with a stone - consider something other than a diamond. Those are quite pretty of course but are overpriced due to the cartels, not to mention the unsavory origins of many of them… I’m personally partial to sapphires but any other colored stone would look stunning in an unusual setting.
hie thee off to crater of diamonds state park in murfreesboro and dig up the stone! nothing says “oh my reason for living! i love thee enough to grub in the dirt”.
i’m not really a big fan of diamonds myself, and I’m too lazy to go diggin one up… if the SO wants to, he can have at it!
The poesy ring (preferrably with a Gaelic inscription) would serve as the wedding band.
We havent set a wedding date yet - I think Projammer was counting on something within the next couple of weeks… you’d think I had cut him off til the wedding or something - sheez.
I already stated no courthouse wedding - but I dont really want a church wedding either. I would like a small, intimate outdoor wedding - like in his brother’s back yard or something.
And with it being outdoors - of course all Dopers are welcome! Bring a camper (dont recommend tents with the fireants around) and byob, though! Oh, and all men must wear kilts.
You can get all three, they make a damascus style ring with three colors of gold in it. It its lovely and rare.
There’s also Titanium.
On eBay, item #160267849630 (for example) is a “Damascus Steel White Gold Ring Wedding Band Titanium” for $250.
Just go to eBay and search Jewelry, rings, bands and look around. Not that you then need to buy the rings there, but it will give you an idea of the huge variety
Do you have any independent jewelers in your area? My fiance had only general guidelines (I prefer filigree Edwardian whatnots and stones that do NOT stick up above the ring)*.
I love it, and it looks like it would mesh with your style, too. He just went to a local (ie NOT Jared’s, Kay’s, etc.) jewelry store and went through their settings; the guy helped him with which would fit with the diamond from my great grandmother. That’s what I recommend doing!
I also didn’t want a diamond, but my grandma gave me my great grandmother’s diamond to use, so how could I refuse THAT?
Google mokume-gane. I love that style–I don’t have an engagement ring (I told him to buy me a dual-fuel range instead) but our wedding bands are sterling silver and white gold mokume-gane, and they are stunning.
I’m sorry I didn’t see this thread earlier, my wife and I have some cool rings IMHO. Have you looked into Mokume Gane? It’s a japanese style that is very unique, layered. Some are really cool, I googled around and found a couple very good artists if you google Mokume Gane Unique Wedding Rings you can see some cool ones. You’ve got to look around though. PM me if you want some recommendations for specific stores with MG in them.
EDIT: Oops some one beat me to it. Nice - I’m happy other people like Mokume Gane
I don’t usually botther with “ditto what delphica said” posts but, we got my wedding band from these folks and I’ve been very pleased. The service was great - we needed a bit of a rush since a different ring maker bailed. The ring is quite comfortable, nicely finished inside.
I have a platinum wedding band, and a round cut diamond in a yellow gold setting with two tiny diamonds on the shoulders on a platinum band for my engagement ring. The diamonds are sort of sunken into and encircled with a solid round setting rather than sitting up in claws. It’s pretty and I’ve never seen anyone with a similar ring.
I went for two colours because I’m anal enough to know that I could never wear one colour of metal on my finger and another elsewhere. Now I can wear gold or silver or platinum earrings, necklaces or bracelets and know that my engement ring won’t clash!
