Suggest reinstating boards.straightdope.com redirect

Not a big deal, but I’m used to coming to this site by boards.straightdope.com. It would redirect to boards.straightdope.com/SDMB, but as of now, it gives a “forbidden” error.

It might make people who don’t remember the /SDMB part thing the boards are still down. It did for me for a moment.

That’s because boards.straightdope.com still points to the old IP address, not the new one. Wait a day or so for the DNS info to propagate and it will once again resolve properly.

Looks like it’s resolved for me. I can now access the new server with boards.straightdope.com. That was pretty fast.

Same here. Works nicely.

I remember years ago waiting for DNS propagation for two or three days before it resolved for everyone. I guess there have been improvements to the DNS server network since then.

I was using boards.straightdope.com/SDMB to connect to the message board, so the address resolved properly. It’s just that “boards.straightdope.com” wasn’t set up to redirect to “boards.straightdope.com/SDMB”, which isn’t strictly speaking a DNS issue. It appears to be fixed now, anyway.

I tried it immediately after reading your OP. The URL Straight Dope Message Board - Your direct line to thousands of the smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks. actually redirected to http://207.97.195.229/sdmb; if I hadn’t looked at the address bar, I’d have never noticed because it seemed like it just loaded normally.

I think so. I’ve always heard the “24-72 hours for propagation” thing, but everytime we’ve made changes to our DNS servers, we get clients all over the place hitting the new addresses within just a few hours.
