Suggest some movies I haven't seen

I’m looking for some moves to add to my Netflix queue. So, suggest your favorites. I’d love to find some movies that I wouldn’t have watched otherwise.

Wristcutters.

It’s about an afterlife for people who commit suicide that’s just like this world, only a little bit worse. From there, it kind of turns into a Wizard of the Oz style story with some romance thrown in for good measure.

In other words, it’s completely awesome.

And yeah, the title is a bit rough, but its not a particularly nasty or gruesome movie.

Fido. It’s like Lassie, only Timmy’s faithful companion is a flesh-eating zombie.

Um - you haven’t seen;
Con Air
Psycho
Muppet Treasure Island
The Great Santini
This is England
Citizen Kane
Dead Poets Society
Rock and Roll High School
Airplane!
Seven
Crocodile Dundee
and
Rocky IV

Using the limited info you gave us - this is what I’d guess you’d like.

When people ask for a movie reference, I like to suggest The Last Supper. It’s a funny dark comedy with a good cast (including Cameron Diaz and a brief role by Jason Alexander), and, since you are willing to change your location to reference Obama, you might enjoy the premise: A group of idealistic, but frustrated, liberals succumb to the temptation of murdering rightwing pundits for their political beliefs.

Yeah, with no taste touchstones, how can we know what you’ll like? I could suggest many movies that I loved/admired such as There Will Be Blood, Brazil, Dersu Uzala, Fitzcarraldo, Return To Oz, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dogville, Mirrormask, Black Book, Charlie Wilson’s War, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Host, Birdy, Groundhog Day, Requiem for a Dream, Moulin Rouge!, Adaptation, Heavenly Creatures, and a slew of others, but how would I know if you’d like them too or if you’d think I was a crack addict?

Full title, Wristcutters, A Love Story. I saw it in the theater when was released and liked it a lot. It loses its way about 2/3 into it, but then gets back on track for the very end. It’s very low-budget and very very odd, but was also unlike anything else I saw last year.

I came into this thread thinking to recommend those exact two movies. I was also thinking about a couple of others on that list (Requiem for a Dream and There Will Be Blood) but I figured they were well known enough to need no recommendation. Anyway if you just want a good time (read: 2 hrs spent alternatively smiling and laughing as hard as your physiology allows) watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

ETA: i meant kkbb and the host were the two movies i was thinking of

Snatch
Trainspotting
Finding Forrester
A Walk In The Clouds
Monster’s Inc.
Much Ado About Nothing
Enchanted April

Matewan.

A list of not-too-well-known films that I like:

Cashback
Painted Veil
Oldboy
Insignificance
Purgatory
Unknown
Perfume - The Story of a Murderer
Max
The Inspector General
Rope
Control

I tend to put a lot of random recommendations into my queue and am pleasantly surprised at how much I like most of them. Here’s what I have liked recently:

The Station Agent
Vera Drake
The King of Kong
Mystery, Alaska

Crazy Love–it’s a documentary about one of the most twisted relationships I’ve ever seen. It’s a jaw-dropper. Literally.

Last night I watched Moolaade, which is an African film about female circumcision. Wait! Where are you going?!

Really, it’s not an “issues” movie. It’s about individuals and the community, and it’s really, really good. Plus, I’m not sure I’d ever seen an African movie before that wasn’t from South Africa (or I might have seen something from North Africa at some point) - but never in the middle, you know, “Africa-Africa”. I believe the director is Senegalese.

Some of my longtime favorites:

Casablanca
Breaker Morant
Dark City
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Sixth Sense
Ruthless People
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek: First Contact
The Incredibles
Trading Places
Cinema Paradiso
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Finding Nemo
Monsters Inc.
Mystery Men
In the Line of Fire
Pride & Prejudice
(2005, with Keira Knightley)

The New World (2005). Terrence Malick does it again. Absolutely gorgeous cinematography makes you feel like you’re back in 17th century Virginia. A bit long, though (135 minutes).

Some of my recent favorites:

Lars and the Real Girl
Juno
Shoot em Up (may be the only one that liked this one but I found it really fun if you just go with it.)
**
Snow Cake**. Odd movie starring Sigourney Weaver as an autistic mother. Small movie, but very well done.
