We’ve always had a real tree, but for obvious reasons they don’t allow them here at the Overlook Hotel. So I’ve been trying to shop for a narrow fake tree probably 6’ tall. Has to be narrow as we don’t have room for something that’s four feet across at the bottom. Trying to do this online is fairly hopeless, as you really can’t tell what it’s going to look like, or they just get horrible reviews.
We have a 5 ft tall fabric Christmas tree wall hanging. I can use safety pins to hang my ordainments and lights and we don’t need to worry about the cats knocking it over. Maybe something like that might work better in your apartment?
My wife ordered a 6’ skinny tree a couple years ago from a website called Santa’s Quarters. They are in New Orleans and it looks like they had a shop in the French Quarter for several decades before closing last year. But it looks like they are still doing business online.
Michael’s.com just posted a big sale, lots of Christmas trees, pencil and otherwise, prelim and unlit. Scroll around, lots of choices. I’ve never had trouble with Michael’s and they and Joann’s are my go-to so as to not give $ to Hobby Lobby.
This is a retirement community. While most people here can function perfectly well, there are some who tend to forget things. Like, say, they may forget to water a live tree, or perhaps put it too close to a portable heater. Management would prefer not to immolate the entire building, so no live trees allowed.
Our first Christmas as a married couple found us buying a 3 foot tall, fake tree that sat on one of the stereo speakers. It was spindly (think Charlie Brown) but filled out nicely with a small string of lights and a box of mini-ornaments. Tinsel might help. A white pillow case to wrap around the base completes the ensemble.
I think we bought it at Lowes. And some years we still set it up.
There is a mail order company called Balsam Hill that seems to offer realistic-looking artificial trees, albeit somewhat expensive ones. A relative by marriage has one. Otherwise, you might check the usual suspects; Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
I looked at the Balsam website a couple of days ago. Nice looking trees, but even the one they call “narrow” is 51" across the bottom. We just don’t have that kind of room in this apartment.
Yeah, I know those places will have them. I was hoping for a specific suggestion as to brand so I don’t have to traipse all over the city. We’ll be going to Costco this week; they might have a display.
My local Ace Hardware carries a pretty big selection of Christmas decorations, including artificial trees – one of our two artificial trees came from there, and it’s held up very well, looks good, and wasn’t hideously expensive. You may want to check if you have an Ace near you, and if they carry trees; I like shopping with them, as opposed to the Home Depot that’s about the same distance away, as it’s a family-owned store (most Aces are local franchisees), and the staff there is great.
I’m glad you found a suitable tree but after my experience trying to get my mother’s tree back in the box, I’d like to see one sold that makes it easy to put away at the end of the season.
