Suggestions for a weekend trip?

I’m planning on taking a few days off work in mid-November, probably the weekend of the 11th. I live in Southern Ohio, and have no idea what to do. I would like to travel a little, at least a few hours (I’ve not gone anywhere in so long that it feels awkward in my town)

So, random mid-west dopers, what would you suggest I see. I figure the longest I would go is 10 hours, which is about the equivalent of going to Myrtle Beach or some areas of Tennessee, but I would possibly consider places north of me, as well. Also, I heard Bob Dylan was gonna be in Boston that weekend, which would be very cool, but a few hours too far for my tastes.

I plan on sightseeing most of the several days I’m there, not really much else but maybe some shopping. I’m not completely worried about the area but I imagine it would be nice to be in a mid-large city, at least where there is some neat stuff to do.

Brendon, I don’t know what your tastes are, but if you want to explore the North Coast, the Barcelona exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art is supposed to be a knock-out. Lots of other cool stuff to do in Cleveland – Rock and Roll Halll of Fame & Museum, Cleveland Botanical Gardens, etc.

That sounds really cool; actually, several times in my life have I heard of it.
I would enjoy something music related, but it doesn’t have to be. Basically, I just want to get away from my normal town/house/life for a few days and enjoy some nice scenery while I’m gone…

Asheville, NC - Biltmore Estate

**Chicago. **
My family does two and three day vacations there one or two times a year. We haven’t yet run out of stuff to do, either with or without the kids.
I believe the Tut exibit is at the Field till the end of December. It may never again be on this continent.
The Shedd Aquarium is probably one of my favorite places in the world, and at the moment they have a baby beluga.
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the premier art museums in this part of the country. They are currently doing a Silk Road exibit in conjunction with the Chigago Symphony Orchestra (Yo-Yo Ma is the Artistic Director)
The Museum of Science and Industry is great fun and features a lot of hands on exibits.
The Blue Man Group has a stationary troup there, and there are several excelent theatre options from the Goodman, which is one of the premier regional theatres to the Ford Center and the Cadillic Palace Theatre which run Broadway tours. There are also a gazillion smaller more avante garde theatre groups.
One of my other favorite places is the Newberry Library. The Newberry specialises in Maps and children’s literature. It is free to the public but you have to be at least 16 years old, and I think with some of the recent map thefts they have tightened security since I was last there.
There are two good zoos if you hit good weather. The Chicago Botanical gardens are wonderful but maybe not this time of year.
I have never been to Chinatown in Chigago but I know that most of the fortune cookies in the country came from there and the food can be incredible.
Pretty much any kind of food from anywhere in the world is available for delivery or dine in, from steaks to tandouri chicken.

I second Chicago. Great city. I need to go back!

Malabar Farm.

I was very much considering chicago especially because there are a few concerts in that area around the time of the trip, so I would get new city/fun stuff plus a band I love…

ahh…Malabar Farm. Wonderful suggestion, simply put. Only problem is, I’ve been in that area so much that it feels like home. My family has a farm house outside of Fredericktown where I lived for a few years…

Still, a strong leaning towards Chicago sounds like a good plan. Excitement, fun, and only a 6 hour drive or so…

Another vote for Chicago. I’m in NE Ohio, and we keep meaning to get to Chicago for a weekend trip. There’s tons to do there.

Not sure how southern in Ohio you are, but from where I am, Toronto’s only about 5-6 hours. Niagara Falls is only about 4-5 hours.

Bermuda is nice in the autumn and you can get some amazing weekend deals at some of the b&bs.

Ever done DC? I’d love to spend a few days just exploring the museums. Gettysburg is worth at least a day trip if you care about battlefields–I highly reccomend the electric map show.
