A friend of mine is hosting a party that has a black and white theme: the guests are wearing black and white (ala Capote, but not as formal) and she wants to have as many black and white foods as possible as well. (Why it’s black and white is a long story.)
It’s not a full dinner party: these are more refreshments and snacks, though anything is welcome.
Any suggestions?
Some are obvious, of course: rice, popcorn, dark chocolates.
She particularly wants foods that use both black and white. (I recommended sushi if she can find a dark enough wrap.)
I don’t know what strikes you as obvious, so here are all the ideas I could come up with:
Oreo cupcakes or mini-cheesecakes.
Water crackers with whipped cream cheese and either black olives or black caviar. For added black - and - whiteness, use poppyseed crackers.
Small slices of bread or white crackers with black olive tapenade. Could also be done with slices of mozzarella.
Cups of blackberries with cream, vanilla mousse, or yogurt. (Make sure the blackberries stay whole. Otherwise, you’ll end up with purple and white party food.)
Black bean and Northern bean salad, maybe made with hearts of palm for extra whiteness.
Small servings of squid ink ravioli with Alfredo sauce.
Mini ice cream sandwiches.
Black and white quinoa salad (purple quinoa cooks up almost completely black.)
Black and white liquorice all-sorts, or marshmallow and liquorice candies.
Not just rice. Black beans and rice. Alternatively, black-eyed beans and a mixture of white and wild rice. Then you get a black and white thing in a black and white thing.
Don’t forget drinks:
Guinness.
Alternate between black and white Russians. Or if any of you are disgusting, black and white sambucas.
For a BDSM party, I once made some gingerbread pigs. I made my own cookie cutter, and covered the cookies with black icing. Then I put those little silvery ornaments around the edges.
